For the choir director. A Psalm of David. In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed; In Your righteousness deliver me. | 1O LORD, I have come to you for protection; don’t let me be disgraced. Save me, for you do what is right. |
Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly; Be to me a rock of strength, A stronghold to save me. | 2Turn your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe. |
For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name's sake You will lead me and guide me. | 3You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger. |
You will pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, For You are my strength. | 4Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone. |
Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have ransomed me, O LORD, God of truth. | 5I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, LORD, for you are a faithful God. |
I hate those who regard vain idols, But I trust in the LORD. | 6I hate those who worship worthless idols. I trust in the LORD. |
I will rejoice and be glad in Your lovingkindness, Because You have seen my affliction; You have known the troubles of my soul, | 7I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love, for you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul. |
And You have not given me over into the hand of the enemy; You have set my feet in a large place. | 8You have not handed me over to my enemies but have set me in a safe place. |
Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body also. | 9Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am in distress. Tears blur my eyes. My body and soul are withering away. |
For my life is spent with sorrow And my years with sighing; My strength has failed because of my iniquity, And my body has wasted away. | 10I am dying from grief; my years are shortened by sadness. Sin has drained my strength; I am wasting away from within. |
Because of all my adversaries, I have become a reproach, Especially to my neighbors, And an object of dread to my acquaintances; Those who see me in the street flee from me. | 11I am scorned by all my enemies and despised by my neighbors— even my friends are afraid to come near me. When they see me on the street, they run the other way. |
I am forgotten as a dead man, out of mind; I am like a broken vessel. | 12I am ignored as if I were dead, as if I were a broken pot. |
For I have heard the slander of many, Terror is on every side; While they took counsel together against me, They schemed to take away my life. | 13I have heard the many rumors about me, and I am surrounded by terror. My enemies conspire against me, plotting to take my life. |
But as for me, I trust in You, O LORD, I say, "You are my God." | 14But I am trusting you, O LORD, saying, “You are my God!” |
My times are in Your hand; Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me. | 15My future is in your hands. Rescue me from those who hunt me down relentlessly. |
Make Your face to shine upon Your servant; Save me in Your lovingkindness. | 16Let your favor shine on your servant. In your unfailing love, rescue me. |
Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I call upon You; Let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol. | 17Don’t let me be disgraced, O LORD, for I call out to you for help. Let the wicked be disgraced; let them lie silent in the grave. |
Let the lying lips be mute, Which speak arrogantly against the righteous With pride and contempt. | 18Silence their lying lips— those proud and arrogant lips that accuse the godly. |
How great is Your goodness, Which You have stored up for those who fear You, Which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, Before the sons of men! | 19How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. |
You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues. | 20You hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from those who conspire against them. You shelter them in your presence, far from accusing tongues. |
Blessed be the LORD, For He has made marvelous His lovingkindness to me in a besieged city. | 21Praise the LORD, for he has shown me the wonders of his unfailing love. He kept me safe when my city was under attack. |
As for me, I said in my alarm, "I am cut off from before Your eyes"; Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications When I cried to You. | 22In panic I cried out, “I am cut off from the LORD!” But you heard my cry for mercy and answered my call for help. |
O love the LORD, all you His godly ones! The LORD preserves the faithful And fully recompenses the proud doer. | 23Love the LORD, all you godly ones! For the LORD protects those who are loyal to him, but he harshly punishes the arrogant. |
Be strong and let your heart take courage, All you who hope in the LORD. | 24So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the LORD! |
