For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea;1For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea,
and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,
and all ate the same spiritual food;3and all ate the same spiritual food,
and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they were all drinking from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.
Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.5But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were cut down in the wilderness.
Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved.6These things happened as examples for us, so that we will not crave evil things as they did.
Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY."7So do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play."
Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.8And let us not be immoral, as some of them were, and twenty-three thousand died in a single day.
Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.9And let us not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by snakes.
Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.10And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.
Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.11These things happened to them as examples and were written for our instruction, on whom the ends of the ages have come.
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.12So let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall.
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.13No trial has overtaken you that is not faced by others. And God is faithful: He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it.
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.14So then, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say.15I am speaking to thoughtful people. Consider what I say.
Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?16Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread that we break a sharing in the body of Christ?
Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.17Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.
Look at the nation Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar?18Look at the people of Israel. Are not those who eat the sacrifices partners in the altar?
What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?19Am I saying that idols or food sacrificed to them amount to anything?
No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.20No, I mean that what the pagans sacrifice is to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be partners with demons.
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.21You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot take part in the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we?22Or are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we really stronger than he is?
All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.23"Everything is lawful," but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is lawful," but not everything builds others up.
Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.24Do not seek your own good, but the good of the other person.
Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience' sake;25Eat anything that is sold in the marketplace without questions of conscience,
FOR THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S, AND ALL IT CONTAINS.26for the earth and its abundance are the Lord's.
If one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience' sake.27If an unbeliever invites you to dinner and you want to go, eat whatever is served without asking questions of conscience.
But if anyone says to you, "This is meat sacrificed to idols," do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience' sake;28But if someone says to you, "This is from a sacrifice," do not eat, because of the one who told you and because of conscience--
I mean not your own conscience, but the other man's; for why is my freedom judged by another's conscience?29I do not mean yours but the other person's. For why is my freedom being judged by another's conscience?
If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks?30If I partake with thankfulness, why am I blamed for the food that I give thanks for?
Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.31So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.
Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God;32Do not give offense to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God,
just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.33just as I also try to please everyone in all things. I do not seek my own benefit, but the benefit of many, so that they may be saved.
