In Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that a large number of people believed, both of Jews and of Greeks.1At Iconium, Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue, where they spoke so well that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed.
But the Jews who disbelieved stirred up the minds of the Gentiles and embittered them against the brethren.2But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.
Therefore they spent a long time there speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord, who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs and wonders be done by their hands.3So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who affirmed the message of His grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.
But the people of the city were divided; and some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.4The people of the city were divided. Some sided with the Jews, and others with the apostles.
And when an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers, to mistreat and to stone them,5But when the Gentiles and Jews, together with their rulers, set out to mistreat and stone them,
they became aware of it and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and the surrounding region;6they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding region,
and there they continued to preach the gospel.7where they continued to preach the gospel.
At Lystra a man was sitting who had no strength in his feet, lame from his mother's womb, who had never walked.8In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked.
This man was listening to Paul as he spoke, who, when he had fixed his gaze on him and had seen that he had faith to be made well,9This man was listening to the words of Paul, who looked intently at him and saw that he had faith to be healed.
said with a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet." And he leaped up and began to walk.10In a loud voice Paul called out, “Stand up on your feet!” And the man jumped up and began to walk.
When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voice, saying in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have become like men and have come down to us."11When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices in the Lycaonian language: “The gods have come down to us in human form!”
And they began calling Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.12Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.
The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds.13The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates, hoping to offer a sacrifice along with the crowds.
But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul found out about this, they tore their clothes and rushed into the crowd, shouting,
and saying, "Men, why are you doing these things? We are also men of the same nature as you, and preach the gospel to you that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, WHO MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM.15“Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them.
"In the generations gone by He permitted all the nations to go their own ways;16In past generations, He let all nations go their own way.
and yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness."17Yet He has not left Himself without testimony to His goodness: He gives you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.”
Even saying these things, with difficulty they restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.18Even with these words, Paul and Barnabas could hardly stop the crowds from sacrificing to them.
But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having won over the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.19Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, presuming he was dead.
But while the disciples stood around him, he got up and entered the city. The next day he went away with Barnabas to Derbe.20But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. And the next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.
After they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,21They preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,
strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, "Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God."22strengthening the souls of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith. “We must endure many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.
When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.23Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church, praying and fasting as they entrusted them to the Lord, in whom they had believed.
They passed through Pisidia and came into Pamphylia.24After passing through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.
When they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.25And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
From there they sailed to Antioch, from which they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had accomplished.26From Attalia they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had just completed.
When they had arrived and gathered the church together, they began to report all things that God had done with them and how He had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.27When they arrived, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them, and how He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
And they spent a long time with the disciples.28And they spent a long time there with the disciples.
