"These are the names of the tribes from the northernmost extremity westward along the road from Hethlon to the entrance of Hamath, Hazar-enan (a border of Damascus) northward to the coast of Hamath. The perimeter is to run east-to-west; the tribe of Dan with one portion; | 1“Here is the list of the tribes of Israel and the territory each is to receive. The territory of Dan is in the extreme north. Its boundary line follows the Hethlon road to Lebo-hamath and then runs on to Hazar-enan on the border of Damascus, with Hamath to the north. Dan’s territory extends all the way across the land of Israel from east to west. |
running along the border of the tribe of Dan from the eastern perimeter to the western perimeter, the tribe of Asher with one portion; | 2“Asher’s territory lies south of Dan’s and also extends from east to west. |
running along the border of the tribe of Asher from the eastern perimeter to the western perimeter, the tribe of Naphtali with one portion; | 3Naphtali’s land lies south of Asher’s, also extending from east to west. |
running along the border of the tribe of Naphtali from the eastern perimeter to the western perimeter, the tribe of Manasseh with one portion; | 4Then comes Manasseh south of Naphtali, and its territory also extends from east to west. |
running along the border of the tribe of Manasseh from the eastern perimeter to the western perimeter, the tribe of Ephraim with one portion; | 5South of Manasseh is Ephraim, |
running along the border of the tribe of Ephraim from the eastern perimeter to the western perimeter, the tribe of Reuben with one portion; | 6and then Reuben, |
and running along the border of the tribe of Reuben from the eastern perimeter to the western perimeter, the tribe of Judah with one portion." | 7and then Judah, all of whose boundaries extend from east to west. |
"Running along the border of the tribe of Judah from the eastern perimeter to the western perimeter you are to set apart the Terumah, 25,000 units wide, with its east-west length equal to one of the other apportionments, from the eastern perimeter to the western perimeter, with the Temple in the middle of it. | 8“South of Judah is the land set aside for a special purpose. It will be 8 1/3 miles wide and will extend as far east and west as the tribal territories, with the Temple at the center. |
The Terumah that you are to give to the LORD is to be 25,000 units wide." | 9“The area set aside for the LORD’s Temple will be 8 1/3 miles long and 6 2/3 miles wide. |
"The holy Terumah is to be reserved for these, the priests: Toward the north, 25,000 units in length; toward the west, 10,000 units in width; toward the east, 10,000 units in width; and toward the south, 25,000 units in length. The LORD's sanctuary is to be in its midst. | 10For the priests there will be a strip of land measuring 8 1/3 miles long by 3 1/3 miles wide, with the LORD’s Temple at the center. |
It is to be for use by priests from the descendants of Zadok, who have observed the things with which I charged them and who did not wander astray when the Israelis went astray, just as the descendants of Levi wandered astray. | 11This area is set aside for the ordained priests, the descendants of Zadok who served me faithfully and did not go astray with the people of Israel and the rest of the Levites. |
It is to be a Terumah for them from the allotment of the land, a Most Holy Place, adjoining the border of the descendants of Levi." | 12It will be their special portion when the land is distributed, the most sacred land of all. Next to the priests’ territory will lie the land where the other Levites will live. |
"Alongside the border of the priests, the descendants of Levi are to be allotted 25,000 units in length and 10,000 units in width. The entire length is to be 25,000 units and its width 10,000 units. | 13“The land allotted to the Levites will be the same size and shape as that belonging to the priests—8 1/3 miles long and 3 1/3 miles wide. Together these portions of land will measure 8 1/3 miles long by 6 2/3 miles wide. |
Furthermore, they are not to sell or exchange any part of it, nor transfer these first fruits of the land, because it is holy to the LORD. | 14None of this special land may ever be sold or traded or used by others, for it belongs to the LORD; it is set apart as holy. |
"The rest, 5,000 units wide and 25,000 units along its front, will serve as a common portion for use by the city for housing and open spaces, since the city is to be in its midst. | 15“An additional strip of land 8 1/3 miles long by 1 2/3 miles wide, south of the sacred Temple area, will be allotted for public use—homes, pasturelands, and common lands, with a city at the center. |
These are to be its dimensions: the north side, 4,500 units; the south side, 4,500 units; the east side, 4,500 units; and the west side 4,500 units. | 16The city will measure 1 1/2 miles on each side—north, south, east, and west. |
The city is to have urban areas set aside: on the north 250 units; on the south, 250 units, on the east, 250 units; and on the west, 250 units. | 17Open lands will surround the city for 150 yards in every direction. |
"The remainder of the length that borders the holy Terumah is to be 10,000 units long eastward and 10,000 units westward. It is to lie adjacent to the holy Terumah. Its harvest will produce food for those who work in the city. | 18Outside the city there will be a farming area that stretches 3 1/3 miles to the east and 3 1/3 miles to the west along the border of the sacred area. This farmland will produce food for the people working in the city. |
The city workers who cultivate it are to come from all the tribes of Israel. | 19Those who come from the various tribes to work in the city may farm it. |
The entire Terumah is to be 25,000 units by 25,000 units—you are to reserve it as a holy Terumah in the form of a square within the city limits." | 20This entire area—including the sacred lands and the city—is a square that measures 8 1/3 miles on each side. |
"Now the remainder of the allotment on either side of the holy Terumah is to be for the Regent Prince and for city property —adjoining the 25,000 units along the eastern border and adjoining the 25,000 units along the western border, and parallel to the allotments. These are to be for the Regent Prince. The holy Terumah and the sanctuary of the Temple is to stand in the middle of it. | 21“The areas that remain, to the east and to the west of the sacred lands and the city, will belong to the prince. Each of these areas will be 8 1/3 miles wide, extending in opposite directions to the eastern and western borders of Israel, with the sacred lands and the sanctuary of the Temple in the center. |
Except for what belongs to the descendants of Levi and the city property, which will stand in the middle of what belongs to the Regent Prince, whatever is between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin is to belong to the Regent Prince." | 22So the prince’s land will include everything between the territories allotted to Judah and Benjamin, except for the areas set aside for the sacred lands and the city. |
"Now as to the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west side, Benjamin is to retain one portion. | 23“These are the territories allotted to the rest of the tribes. Benjamin’s territory lies just south of the prince’s lands, and it extends across the entire land of Israel from east to west. |
Adjacent to the border of Benjamin running from east to west, Simeon is to retain one portion. | 24South of Benjamin’s territory lies that of Simeon, also extending across the land from east to west. |
Adjacent to the border of Simeon running from east to west, Issachar is to retain one portion. | 25Next is the territory of Issachar with the same eastern and western boundaries. |
Adjacent to the border of Issachar running from east to west, Zebulun is to retain one portion. | 26“Then comes the territory of Zebulun, which also extends across the land from east to west. |
Adjacent to the border of Zebulun running from east to west, Gad is to retain one portion. | 27The territory of Gad is just south of Zebulun with the same borders to the east and west. |
Adjacent to the border of Gad to the south and extending toward the south, the border is to proceed from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, then to the Wadi of Egypt, and from there to the Mediterranean Sea. | 28The southern border of Gad runs from Tamar to the waters of Meribah at Kadesh and then follows the Brook of Egypt to the Mediterranean. |
This is the land that you are to allocate by lottery to the tribes of Israel as their inheritance, and these are their respective divisions," declares the Lord GOD. | 29“These are the allotments that will be set aside for each tribe’s exclusive possession. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken! The Gates of the City |
"These are the exits to the city: On the north side, 4,500 units by measurement, | 30“These will be the exits to the city: On the north wall, which is 1 1/2 miles long, |
are to be the gates of the city. Named after the tribes of Israel, three gates are to serve the north site: one named the Reuben Gate, one named the Judah Gate, and one named the Levi Gate. | 31there will be three gates, each one named after a tribe of Israel. The first will be named for Reuben, the second for Judah, and the third for Levi. |
On the east side, 4,500 units by measurement, there are to be three gates: one named the Joseph Gate, one named the Benjamin Gate, and one named the Dan Gate. | 32On the east wall, also 1 1/2 miles long, the gates will be named for Joseph, Benjamin, and Dan. |
On the south side, 4,500 units by measurement, there are to be three gates: one named the Simeon Gate, one named the Issachar Gate, and one named the Zebulun Gate. | 33The south wall, also 1 1/2 miles long, will have gates named for Simeon, Issachar, and Zebulun. |
On the west side, 4,500 units by measurement, there are to be three gates: one named the Gad Gate, one named the Asher Gate, and one named the Naphtali Gate. | 34And on the west wall, also 1 1/2 miles long, the gates will be named for Gad, Asher, and Naphtali. |
A perimeter is to measure 18,000 units, and the name of the city from that time on is to be: | 35“The distance around the entire city will be 6 miles. And from that day the name of the city will be ‘The LORD Is There.’ ” |
