And so he condemned sin in the flesh, |
| 4so that the righteous requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not live according to human nature but according to the Spirit. | 4in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. |
| 5For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. | 5Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. |
| 6To focus our minds on the human nature leads to death, but to focus our minds on the Spirit leads to life and peace. | 6The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. |
| 7That is why the mind that focuses on human nature is hostile toward God. It refuses to submit to the authority of God's Law because it is powerless to do so. | 7The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. |
| 8Indeed, those who are under the control of human nature cannot please God. | 8Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. |
| 9You, however, are not under the control of the human nature but under the control of the Spirit, since God's Spirit lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of the Messiah, he does not belong to him. | 9You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. |
| 10But if the Messiah is in you, your bodies are dead due to sin, but the spirit is alive due to righteousness. | 10But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. |
| 11And if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then the one who raised the Messiah from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive by his Spirit who lives in you. | 11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. |
| 12Consequently, brothers, we are not—with respect to human nature, that is—under an obligation to live according to human nature. | 12Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation--but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. |

| 22For we know that all the rest of creation has been groaning with the pains of childbirth up to the present time. | 22We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. |
| 23However, not only the creation, but we who have the first fruits of the Spirit also groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption, the redemption of our bodies. | 23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. |
| 24For we were saved with this hope in mind. Now a hope that can be observed is not really hope, for who hopes for what can be seen? | 24For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? |
| 25But if we hope for what we do not yet observe, we eagerly wait for it with patience. | 25But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. |
| 26In the same way, the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, since we do not know how to pray as we should. But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words, | 26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. |
| 27and the one who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, for the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to God's will. | 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God. |
| 28And we know that for those who love God, that is, for those who are called according to his purpose, all things are working together for good. | 28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. |
| 29For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that the Son might be the firstborn among many brothers. | 29For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. |

| 31What, then, can we say about all of this? If God is for us, who can be against us? | 31What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? |

| 33Who will accuse God's elect? It is God who justifies! | 33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. |
| 34Who is the one to condemn? It is the Messiah Jesus who is interceding on our behalf. He died, and more importantly, has been raised and is seated at the right hand of God. | 34Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died--more than that, who was raised to life--is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. |
| 35Who will separate us from the Messiah's love? Can trouble, distress, persecution, hunger, nakedness, danger, or a violent death do this? | 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? |
| 36As it is written, "For your sake we are being put to death all day long. We are thought of as sheep headed for slaughter." | 36As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." |
| 37In all these things we are triumphantly victorious due to the one who loved us. | 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. |
| 38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, | 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, |
| 39nor anything above, nor anything below, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is ours in union with the Messiah Jesus, our Lord. | 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. |
