| 1Therefore, rid yourselves of every kind of evil and deception, hypocrisy, jealousy, and every kind of slander. | 1So get rid of all evil and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. |

| 19For it is a fine thing if, when moved by your conscience to please God, you suffer patiently when wronged. | 19For this finds God's favor, if because of conscience toward God someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly. |
| 20What good does it do if, when you sin, you patiently receive punishment for it? But if you suffer for doing good and receive it patiently, you have God's approval. | 20For what credit is it if you sin and are mistreated and endure it? But if you do good and suffer and so endure, this finds favor with God. |
| 21This is, in fact, what you were called to do, because: The Messiah also suffered for you and left an example for you to follow in his steps. | 21For to this you were called, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in his steps. |
