| 5I am the vine, you are the branches. The one who abides in me while I abide in him produces much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. | 5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. |
| 6Unless a person abides in me, he is thrown away like a pruned branch and dries up. | 7"If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you can ask for anything you want, and you'll receive it. | 7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. |
| 8This is how my Father is glorified, when you produce a lot of fruit and so prove to be my disciples. | 8By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. |
| 9Just as the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. So abide in my love. | 9As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. |

| 16"You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you. I have appointed you to go and produce fruit that will last, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you. | 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. |
| 17I am giving you these commandments so that you may love one another." | 17These things I command you, so that you will love one another. |
| 18"If the world hates you, you should realize that it hated me before you. | 18“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. |
| 19If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as one of its own. But because you do not belong to the world and I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you. | 19If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. |
| 20Remember what I told you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. | 20Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. |
| 21They will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me. | 21But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. |
| 22"If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have any sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. | 22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. |
| 23The person who hates me also hates my Father. | 23Whoever hates me hates my Father also. |
| 24If I hadn't done among them the actions that no one else did, they wouldn't have any sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. | 24If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. |
| 25But this happened so that what has been written in their Law might be fulfilled: 'They hated me for no reason.' | 25But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ |
| 26"When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father— the Spirit of Truth, who comes from the Father—he will testify on my behalf. | 26“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. |
| 27You will testify also, because you have been with me from the beginning. | 27And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. |
