| 16and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Messiah. | 16Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. |
| 17So all the generations from Abraham to David were 14 generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, 14 generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Messiah, 14 generations. | 17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations. |
| 18The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After His mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. | 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. |
| 19So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. | 19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. |
| 20But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit. | 20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. |

| 24When Joseph got up from sleeping, he did as the Lord's angel had commanded him. He married her | 24And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, |
| 25but did not know her intimately until she gave birth to a son. And he named Him Jesus. | 25but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. |
