1After this, David defeated the Philistines, subdued them, and took Gath and its villages from Philistine control. 1Now after this it came about that David defeated the Philistines and subdued them and took Gath and its towns from the hand of the Philistines.
2He also defeated the Moabites, and they became David's subjects and brought tribute. 2He defeated Moab, and the Moabites became servants to David, bringing tribute.
3David also defeated King Hadadezer of Zobah at Hamath when he went to establish his control at the Euphrates River. 3David also defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to establish his rule to the Euphrates River.
4David captured 1,000 chariots, 7,000 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers from him, hamstrung all the horses, and kept 100 chariots. 4David took from him 1,000 chariots and 7,000 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers, and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved enough of them for 100 chariots.
5When the Arameans of Damascus came to assist King Hadadezer of Zobah, David struck down 22,000 Aramean men. 5When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed 22,000 men of the Arameans.
6Then he placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became David's subjects and brought tribute. The LORD made David victorious wherever he went. 6Then David put garrisons among the Arameans of Damascus; and the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And the LORD helped David wherever he went.
7David took the gold shields carried by Hadadezer's officers and brought them to Jerusalem. 7David took the shields of gold which were carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.
8From Tibhath and Cun, Hadadezer's cities, David also took huge quantities of bronze, from which Solomon made the bronze reservoir, the pillars, and the bronze articles. 8Also from Tibhath and from Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took a very large amount of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze sea and the pillars and the bronze utensils.
9When King Tou of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of King Hadadezer of Zobah, 9Now when Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer king of Zobah,
10he sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and to congratulate him because David had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Tou and Hadadezer had fought many wars. Hadoram brought all kinds of gold, silver, and bronze items. 10he sent Hadoram his son to King David to greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and had defeated him; for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou. And Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze.
11King David also dedicated these to the LORD, along with the silver and gold he had carried off from all the nations--from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and the Amalekites. 11King David also dedicated these to the LORD with the silver and the gold which he had carried away from all the nations: from Edom, Moab, the sons of Ammon, the Philistines, and from Amalek.
12Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. 12Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah defeated 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
13He put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. The LORD made David victorious wherever he went. 13Then he put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became servants to David. And the LORD helped David wherever he went.
14So David reigned over all Israel, administering justice and righteousness for all his people. 14So David reigned over all Israel; and he administered justice and righteousness for all his people.
15Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was court historian; 15Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;
16Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests; Shavsha was court secretary; 16and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Abimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and Shavsha was secretary;
17Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were the chief officials at the king's side. 17and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and the sons of David were chiefs at the king's side.
