Holman Christian Standard Bible | International Standard Version |
He also said to the disciples: "There was a rich man who received an accusation that his manager was squandering his possessions. | 1Now Jesus was saying to the disciples, "A rich man had a servant manager who was accused of wasting his assets. |
So he called the manager in and asked, What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you can no longer be my manager.' | 2So he called for him and asked him, 'What's this I hear about you? You can't be my manager any longer. Now give me a report about your management!' |
"Then the manager said to himself, What should I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I'm not strong enough to dig; I'm ashamed to beg. | 3"Then the servant manager told himself, 'What should I do? My master is taking my position away from me. I'm not strong enough to plow, and I'm ashamed to beg. |
I know what I'll do so that when I'm removed from management, people will welcome me into their homes.' | 4I know what I'll do so that people will welcome me into their homes when I'm dismissed from my job.' |
"So he summoned each one of his master's debtors. How much do you owe my master?' he asked the first one. | 5"So he called for each of his master's debtors. He asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?' |
"A hundred measures of olive oil,' he said. "'Take your invoice,' he told him, sit down quickly, and write 50.' | 6The man replied, 'A hundred jars of olive oil.' The manager told him, 'Get your bill. Sit down quickly and write "50."' |
"Next he asked another, How much do you owe?' "'A hundred measures of wheat,' he said. "'Take your invoice,' he told him, and write 80.' | 7Then he asked another debtor, 'How much do you owe?' The man replied, 'A hundred containers of wheat.' The manager told him, 'Get your bill and write "80."' |
"The master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted astutely. For the sons of this age are more astute than the sons of light in dealing with their own people. | 8The master praised the dishonest servant manager for being so clever, because worldly people are more clever than enlightened people in dealing with their own. |
And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of the unrighteous money so that when it fails, they may welcome you into eternal dwellings. | 9"I'm telling you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails, they will welcome you into eternal homes. |
Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much. | 10Whoever is faithful with very little is also faithful with a lot, and whoever is dishonest with very little is also dishonest with a lot. |
So if you have not been faithful with the unrighteous money, who will trust you with what is genuine? | 11So if you haven't been faithful with unrighteous wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? |
And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what is your own? | 12And if you haven't been faithful with what belongs to foreigners, who will give you what is your own? |
No household slave can be the slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can't be slaves to both God and money." | 13"No servant can serve two masters, because either he will hate one and love the other, or be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and wealth!" |
The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and scoffing at Him. | 14Now the Pharisees, who love money, had been listening to all this and began to ridicule Jesus. |
And He told them: "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly admired by people is revolting in God's sight. | 15So he told them, "You try to justify yourselves in front of people, but God knows your hearts, because what is highly valued by people is detestable to God. |
"The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then, the good news of the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone is strongly urged to enter it. | 16"The Law and the Prophets remained until John. Since then, the good news about the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone entering it is under attack. |
But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter in the law to drop out. | 17However, it is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for one stroke of a letter in the Law to be dropped. |
"Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and everyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. | 18Any man who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery." |
"There was a rich man who would dress in purple and fine linen, feasting lavishly every day. | 19"Once there was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and live in great luxury every day. |
But a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, was left at his gate. | 20A beggar named Lazarus, who was covered with sores, was brought to his gate. |
He longed to be filled with what fell from the rich man's table, but instead the dogs would come and lick his sores. | 21He was always trying to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs used to come and lick his sores. |
One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. | 22"One day, the beggar died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. |
And being in torment in Hades, he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off, with Lazarus at his side. | 23In the afterlife, where he was in constant torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus by his side. |
Father Abraham!' he called out, Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this flame!' | 24So he shouted, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off my tongue, because I am suffering in this fire.' |
"Son,' Abraham said, remember that during your life you received your good things, just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, while you are in agony. | 25"But Abraham said, 'My child, remember that during your lifetime you received blessings, while Lazarus received hardships. But now he is being comforted here, while you suffer. |
Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that those who want to pass over from here to you cannot; neither can those from there cross over to us.' | 26Besides all this, a wide chasm has been fixed between us, so that those who want to cross from this side to you cannot do so, nor can they cross from your side to us.' |
"Father,' he said, then I beg you to send him to my father's house-- | 27"The rich man said, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house— |
because I have five brothers--to warn them, so they won't also come to this place of torment.' | 28because I have five brothers—to warn them, so that they won't end up in this place of torture, too.' |
"But Abraham said, They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.' | 29"Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets. They should listen to them!' |
"No, father Abraham,' he said. But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' | 30"But the rich man replied, 'No, father Abraham! But if someone from the dead went to them, they would repent.' |
"But he told him, If they don't listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.'" | 31"Then Abraham told him, 'If your brothers do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded, even if someone were to rise from the dead.'" |
