Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding--because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished with sin-- | 1Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, |
in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God's will. | 2so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. |
For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the Gentiles choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry. | 3For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. |
They are surprised that you don't join them in the same flood of wild living--and they slander you. | 4In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; |
They will give an account to the one who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. | 5but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. |
For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead, so that, although they might be judged in the flesh according to human standards, they might live in the spirit according to God's standards. | 6For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God. |
The end of all things is near; therefore, be alert and sober-minded for prayer. | 7The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. |
Above all, maintain constant love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins. | 8Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. |
Be hospitable to one another without complaining. | 9Be hospitable to one another without complaint. |
Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God. | 10As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. |
If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God's words; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. | 11Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. |
Dear friends, don't be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you as if something unusual were happening to you. | 12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; |
Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed. | 13but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. |
If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. | 14If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. |
Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler. | 15Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; |
But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed but let him glorify God in having that name. | 16but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. |
For the time has come for judgment to begin with God's household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God? | 17For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? |
And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? | 18AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER? |
So then, let those who suffer according to God's will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator while doing what is good. | 19Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. |
