Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. | 1Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, |
Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that you may grow up into your salvation, | 2like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, |
if you have tasted that the Lord is good. | 3if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. |
As you come to him, a living stone--rejected by people but chosen and honored by God-- | 4And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, |
you yourselves, as living stones, a spiritual house, are being built to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. | 5you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. |
For it stands in Scripture: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and honored cornerstone, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame. | 6For this is contained in Scripture: "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." |
So honor will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving, The stone that the builders rejected--this one has become the cornerstone, | 7This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, "THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone," |
and A stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over. They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined for this. | 8and, "A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. |
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. | 9But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; |
Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. | 10for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. |
Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and exiles to abstain from sinful desires that wage war against the soul. | 11Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. |
Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, so that when they slander you as evildoers, they will observe your good works and will glorify God on the day he visits. | 12Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation. |
Submit to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the emperor as the supreme authority | 13Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, |
or to governors as those sent out by him to punish those who do what is evil and to praise those who do what is good. | 14or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. |
For it is God's will that you silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing good. | 15For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. |
Submit as free people, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but as God's slaves. | 16Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God. |
Honor everyone. Love the brothers and sisters. Fear God. Honor the emperor. | 17Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king. |
Household slaves, submit to your masters with all reverence not only to the good and gentle ones but also to the cruel. | 18Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable. |
For it brings favor if, because of a consciousness of God, someone endures grief from suffering unjustly. | 19For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly. |
For what credit is there if when you do wrong and are beaten, you endure it? But when you do what is good and suffer, if you endure it, this brings favor with God. | 20For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God. |
For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. | 21For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, |
He did not commit sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth; | 22WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH; |
when he was insulted, he did not insult in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. | 23and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; |
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree; so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. | 24and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. |
For you were like sheep going astray, but you have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. | 25For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. |
