| 1Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. | 1"Arise! Shine! For your light arrives! The splendor of the LORD shines on you! |
| 2For behold, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness is over the peoples; but the LORD will rise upon you, and His glory will appear over you. | 2For, look, darkness covers the earth and deep darkness covers the nations, but the LORD shines on you; his splendor appears over you. |
| 3Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. | 3Nations come to your light, kings to your bright light. |
| 4Lift up your eyes and look around: They all gather and come to you; your sons will come from afar, and your daughters will be carried on the arm. | 4Look all around you! They all gather and come to you--your sons come from far away and your daughters are escorted by guardians. |
| 5Then you will look and be radiant, and your heart will tremble and swell with joy, because the riches of the sea will be brought to you, and the wealth of the nations will come to you. | 5Then you will look and smile, you will be excited and your heart will swell with pride. All the merchants of Sheba will come, bringing gold and incense and singing praises to the LORD. |
| 7All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered to you; the rams of Nebaioth will serve you and go up on My altar with acceptance; I will adorn My glorious house. | 7All the sheep of Kedar will be gathered to you; the rams of Nebaioth will be available to you as sacrifices. They will go up on my altar acceptably, and I will bestow honor on my majestic temple. |
| 8Who are these who fly like clouds, like doves to their shelters? | 8Who are these who float along like a cloud, who fly like doves to their shelters? |
| 9Surely the islands will wait for Me, with the ships of Tarshish in the lead, to bring your children from afar, with their silver and gold, to the honor of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for He has glorified you. | 9Indeed, the coastlands look eagerly for me, the large ships are in the lead, bringing your sons from far away, along with their silver and gold, to honor the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has bestowed honor on you. |
| 10Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you. Although I struck you in anger, yet in favor I will show you mercy. | 10Foreigners will rebuild your walls; their kings will serve you. | 11Your gates will always stand open; they will never be shut, day or night, so that the wealth of the nations may be brought into you, with their kings being led in procession. | 11Your gates will remain open at all times; they will not be shut during the day or at night, so that the wealth of nations may be delivered, with their kings leading the way. |
| 12For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish; it will be utterly destroyed. | 12Indeed, nations or kingdoms that do not serve you will perish; such nations will be totally destroyed. |
| 13The glory of Lebanon will come to you—its cypress, elm, and boxwood together—to adorn the place of My sanctuary, and I will glorify the place of My feet. | 13The splendor of Lebanon will come to you, its evergreens, firs, and cypresses together, to beautify my palace; I will bestow honor on my throne room. |
| 14The sons of your oppressors will come and bow down to you; all who reviled you will fall facedown at your feet and call you the City of the LORD, Zion of the Holy One of Israel. | 14The children of your oppressors will come bowing to you; all who treated you with disrespect will bow down at your feet. They will call you, 'The City of the LORD, Zion of the Holy One of Israel.' |
| 15Whereas you have been forsaken and despised, with no one passing through, I will make you an everlasting pride, a joy from age to age. | 15You were once abandoned and despised, with no one passing through, but I will make you a permanent source of pride and joy to coming generations. |
| 16You will drink the milk of nations and nurse at the breasts of royalty; you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. | 16You will drink the milk of nations; you will nurse at the breasts of kings. Then you will recognize that I, the LORD, am your deliverer, your protector, the powerful ruler of Jacob. |
| 17Instead of bronze I will bring you gold; I will bring silver in place of iron, bronze instead of wood, and iron instead of stones. I will appoint peace as your governor and righteousness as your ruler. | 17Instead of bronze, I will bring you gold, instead of iron, I will bring you silver, instead of wood, I will bring you bronze, instead of stones, I will bring you iron. I will make prosperity your overseer, and vindication your sovereign ruler. |
| 18No longer will violence be heard in your land, nor ruin or destruction within your borders. But you will name your walls Salvation and your gates Praise. | 18Sounds of violence will no longer be heard in your land, or the sounds of destruction and devastation within your borders. You will name your walls, 'Deliverance,' and your gates, 'Praise.' |
| 19No longer will the sun be your light by day, nor the brightness of the moon shine on your night; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your splendor. | 19The sun will no longer supply light for you by day, nor will the moon's brightness shine on you; the LORD will be your permanent source of light--the splendor of your God will shine upon you. |
| 20Your sun will no longer set, and your moon will not wane; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and the days of your sorrow will cease. | 20Your sun will no longer set; your moon will not disappear; the LORD will be your permanent source of light; your time of sorrow will be over. |
| 21Then all your people will be righteous; they will possess the land forever; they are the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, so that I may be glorified. | 21All of your people will be godly; they will possess the land permanently. I will plant them like a shoot; they will be the product of my labor, through whom I reveal my splendor. |
| 22The least of you will become a thousand, and the smallest a mighty nation. I am the LORD; in its time I will accomplish it quickly. | 22The least of you will multiply into a thousand; the smallest of you will become a large nation. When the right time comes, I the LORD will quickly do this!" |
