| 1Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. | 1So get rid of all evil and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. |

| 12Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us. | 12and maintain good conduct among the non-Christians, so that though they now malign you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God when he appears. |
| 13Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to the king as the supreme authority, | 13Be subject to every human institution for the Lord's sake, whether to a king as supreme |

| 19For if anyone endures the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God, this is to be commended. | 19For this finds God's favor, if because of conscience toward God someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly. |
| 20How is it to your credit if you are beaten for doing wrong and you endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. | 20For what credit is it if you sin and are mistreated and endure it?
