“I loathe my own life; I will express my complaint and speak in the bitterness of my soul.1"I loathe my own life; I will give full vent to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
I will say to God: Do not condemn me! Let me know why You prosecute me.2"I will say to God, 'Do not condemn me; Let me know why You contend with me.
Does it please You to oppress me, to reject the work of Your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked?3'Is it right for You indeed to oppress, To reject the labor of Your hands, And to look favorably on the schemes of the wicked?
Do You have eyes of flesh? Do You see as man sees?4'Have You eyes of flesh? Or do You see as a man sees?
Are Your days like those of a mortal, or Your years like those of a man,5'Are Your days as the days of a mortal, Or Your years as man's years,
that You should seek my iniquity and search out my sin—6That You should seek for my guilt And search after my sin?
though You know that I am not guilty, and there is no deliverance from Your hand?7'According to Your knowledge I am indeed not guilty, Yet there is no deliverance from Your hand.
Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me. Would You now turn and destroy me?8'Your hands fashioned and made me altogether, And would You destroy me?
Please remember that You molded me like clay. Would You now return me to dust?9'Remember now, that You have made me as clay; And would You turn me into dust again?
Did You not pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese?10'Did You not pour me out like milk And curdle me like cheese;
You clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews.11Clothe me with skin and flesh, And knit me together with bones and sinews?
You have granted me life and loving devotion, and Your care has preserved my spirit.12'You have granted me life and lovingkindness; And Your care has preserved my spirit.
Yet You concealed these things in Your heart, and I know that this was in Your mind:13'Yet these things You have concealed in Your heart; I know that this is within You:
If I sinned, You would take note, and would not acquit me of my iniquity.14If I sin, then You would take note of me, And would not acquit me of my guilt.
If I am guilty, woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my affliction.15If I am wicked, woe to me! And if I am righteous, I dare not lift up my head. I am sated with disgrace and conscious of my misery.
Should I hold my head high, You would hunt me like a lion, and again display Your power against me.16Should my head be lifted up, You would hunt me like a lion; And again You would show Your power against me.
You produce new witnesses against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships assault me in wave after wave.17'You renew Your witnesses against me And increase Your anger toward me; Hardship after hardship is with me.
Why then did You bring me from the womb? Oh, that I had died, and no eye had seen me!18'Why then have You brought me out of the womb? Would that I had died and no eye had seen me!
If only I had never come to be, but had been carried from the womb to the grave.19'I should have been as though I had not been, Carried from womb to tomb.'
Are my days not few? Withdraw from me, that I may have a little comfort,20"Would He not let my few days alone? Withdraw from me that I may have a little cheer
before I go—never to return—to a land of darkness and gloom,21Before I go-- and I shall not return-- To the land of darkness and deep shadow,
to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”22The land of utter gloom as darkness itself, Of deep shadow without order, And which shines as the darkness."
