Parallel Chapters The Lord Calls Samuel | 1The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. | 1Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD in the presence of Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. | 1Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD before Eli. | 2One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. | 2At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. | 2It happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place (now his eyesight had begun to grow dim and he could not see well), | 2And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; | 2One day Eli, whose eyesight was failing, was lying in his room. |

| 6Again the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." "My son," Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." | 6And the LORD called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” | 6The LORD called yet again, "Samuel!" | 9So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'" God's Judgment against Eli | 10The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Samuel Shares his Vision | 15Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, | 15Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. | 15So Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. | 16but Eli called him and said, "Samuel, my son." | 17"What was it he said to you?" Eli asked. "Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you." | 17And Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” | 17He said, "What is the word that He spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. May God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the words that He spoke to you." | 17And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee. | 17"What was the message He gave you?" Eli asked. "Don't hide it from me. May God punish you and do so severely if you hide anything from me that He told you." |
| 18So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, "He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes." | 18So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the LORD. Let him do what seems good to him.” | 18So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him.
