Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors
(Jeremiah 12:14–17)

1  דִּבְרֵ֣י (The words) עָמ֔וֹס (of Amos), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הָיָ֥ה (was) בַנֹּקְדִ֖ים (among the sheepherders) מִתְּק֑וֹעַ (from Tekoa) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that which) חָזָ֨ה (he saw) עַל־ (concerning) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (Israel) בִּימֵ֣י׀ (in the days) עֻזִיָּ֣ה (of Uzziah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah), וּבִימֵ֞י (and in the days) יָרָבְעָ֤ם (of Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) יוֹאָשׁ֙ (of Joash) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), שְׁנָתַ֖יִם (two years) לִפְנֵ֥י (before) הָרָֽעַשׁ׃ (the earthquake). 2  וַיֹּאמַ֓ר׀ (And he said),

יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) מִצִיּ֣וֹן (from Zion) יִשְׁאָ֔ג (roars)

וּמִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (and from Jerusalem) יִתֵּ֣ן (He gives forth) קוֹל֑וֹ (His voice)

וְאָֽבְלוּ֙ (and mourn), נְא֣וֹת (The pastures) הָרֹעִ֔ים (of the shepherds)

וְיָבֵ֖שׁ (and withers). רֹ֥אשׁ (The head) הַכַּרְמֶֽל׃פ (of Carmel).

3  כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH);

עַל־ (Over) שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ (three) פִּשְׁעֵ֣י (transgressions) דַמֶּ֔שֶׂק (of Damascus), וְעַל־ (even over) אַרְבָּעָ֖ה (four),

לֹ֣א (not) אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ (I will turn back)

עַל־ (over) דּוּשָׁ֛ם (their threshing) בַּחֲרֻצ֥וֹת (with sledges) הַבַּרְזֶ֖ל (of iron)

אֶת־ (-) הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (Gilead).

4  וְשִׁלַּ֥חְתִּי (And I will send) אֵ֖שׁ (a fire) בְּבֵ֣ית (into the house) חֲזָאֵ֑ל (of Hazael),

וְאָכְלָ֖ה (and it will devour) אַרְמְנ֥וֹת (the citadels) בֶּן־ (of Ben-) הֲדָֽד׃ (hadad).

5  וְשָֽׁבַרְתִּי֙ (And I will break) בְּרִ֣יחַ (the bar) דַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק (of Damascus),

וְהִכְרַתִּ֤י (and I will cut off) יוֹשֵׁב֙ (the ruler) מִבִּקְעַת־ (from the Valley) אָ֔וֶן (of Aven),

וְתוֹמֵ֥ךְ (and the one holding) שֵׁ֖בֶט (a scepter) מִבֵּ֣ית (from Beth-) עֶ֑דֶן (eden)

וְגָל֧וּ (and will be removed) עַם־ (the people) אֲרָ֛ם (of Aram) קִ֖ירָה (to Kir),

אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָֽה׃פ (YHWH).

6  כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH);

עַל־ (Over) שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ (three) פִּשְׁעֵ֣י (transgressions) עַזָּ֔ה (of Gaza), וְעַל־ (even over) אַרְבָּעָ֖ה (four),

לֹ֣א (not) אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ (will I turn back)

עַל־ (over) הַגְלוֹתָ֛ם (their taking captive) גָּל֥וּת (captivity), שְׁלֵמָ֖ה (a whole)

לְהַסְגִּ֥יר (delivering them up) לֶאֱדֽוֹם׃ (to Edom);

7  וְשִׁלַּ֥חְתִּי (and I will send) אֵ֖שׁ (a fire) בְּחוֹמַ֣ת (upon the wall) עַזָּ֑ה (of Gaza),

וְאָכְלָ֖ה (and it will devour) אַרְמְנֹתֶֽיהָ׃ (her citadels).

8  וְהִכְרַתִּ֤י (And I will cut off) יוֹשֵׁב֙ (the ruler) מֵֽאַשְׁדּ֔וֹד (from Ashdod)

וְתוֹמֵ֥ךְ (and the one holding) שֵׁ֖בֶט (the scepter) מֵֽאַשְׁקְל֑וֹן (from Ashkelon)

וַהֲשִׁיב֨וֹתִי (and I will turn) יָדִ֜י (My hand) עַל־ (upon) עֶקְר֗וֹן (Ekron),

וְאָֽבְדוּ֙ (and will perish), שְׁאֵרִ֣ית (the remnant) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines)

אָמַ֖ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֥י (the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃פ (YHWH).

9  כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH);

עַל־ (Over) שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ (three) פִּשְׁעֵי־ (transgressions) צֹ֔ר (of Tyre), וְעַל־ (even over) אַרְבָּעָ֖ה (four),

לֹ֣א (not) אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ (I will turn back)

עַֽל־ (over) הַסְגִּירָ֞ם (their delivering up) גָּל֤וּת (the captivity) שְׁלֵמָה֙ (whole) לֶאֱד֔וֹם (to Edom),

וְלֹ֥א (and not) זָכְר֖וּ (did they remember) בְּרִ֥ית (the covenant); אַחִֽים׃ (of brotherhood).

10  וְשִׁלַּ֥חְתִּי (And I will send) אֵ֖שׁ (a fire) בְּח֣וֹמַת (upon the wall) צֹ֑ר (of Tyre),

וְאָכְלָ֖ה (and it will devour) אַרְמְנֹתֶֽיהָ׃פ (her citadels).

11  כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)

עַל־ (Over) שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ (three) פִּשְׁעֵ֣י (transgressions) אֱד֔וֹם (of Edom), וְעַל־ (even over) אַרְבָּעָ֖ה (four),

לֹ֣א (not) אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ (will I turn back)

עַל־ (over) רָדְפ֨וֹ (his pursuing) בַחֶ֤רֶב (with the sword), אָחִיו֙ (his brother)

וְשִׁחֵ֣ת (and he destroyed) רַחֲמָ֔יו (his compassion),

וַיִּטְרֹ֤ף (and tore) לָעַד֙ (perpetually), אַפּ֔וֹ (with his anger)

וְעֶבְרָת֖וֹ (and his wrath) שְׁמָ֥רָה (he did guard) נֶֽצַח׃ (forever).

12  וְשִׁלַּ֥חְתִּי (And I will send) אֵ֖שׁ (a fire) בְּתֵימָ֑ן (on Teman),

וְאָכְלָ֖ה (and it will devour) אַרְמְנ֥וֹת (the citadels) בָּצְרָֽה׃פ (of Bozrah).

13  כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH);

עַל־ (Over) שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ (three) פִּשְׁעֵ֣י (transgressions) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֔וֹן (of Ammon), וְעַל־ (even over) אַרְבָּעָ֖ה (four),

לֹ֣א (not) אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ (will I turn back)

עַל־ (over) בִּקְעָם֙ (their ripping open) הָר֣וֹת (the pregnant women) הַגִּלְעָ֔ד (of Gilead),

לְמַ֖עַן (so that) הַרְחִ֥יב (they might enlarge) אֶת־ (-) גְּבוּלָֽם׃ (their border).

14  וְהִצַּ֤תִּי (And I will kindle) אֵשׁ֙ (a fire) בְּחוֹמַ֣ת (upon the wall) רַבָּ֔ה (of Rabbah),

וְאָכְלָ֖ה (and it will devour) אַרְמְנוֹתֶ֑יהָ (her citadels)

בִּתְרוּעָה֙ (with a shout) בְּי֣וֹם (in the day) מִלְחָמָ֔ה (of battle),

בְּסַ֖עַר (with a tempest) בְּי֥וֹם (in the day) סוּפָֽה (of the whirlwind).

15  וְהָלַ֥ךְ (And will go) מַלְכָּ֖ם (their king) בַּגּוֹלָ֑ה (into exile),

ה֧וּא (he) וְשָׂרָ֛יו (and his princes) יַחְדָּ֖ו (together),

אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָֽה׃פ (YHWH).
