Preparations for the Temple
(1 Kings 5:1–6)

1  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (Solomon) לִבְנ֥וֹת (to build) בַּ֙יִת֙ (a temple) לְשֵׁ֣ם (for the Name) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וּבַ֖יִת (and a house) לְמַלְכוּתֽוֹ׃ (for his kingdom). 2  וַיִּסְפֹּ֨ר (And selected) שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה (Solomon) שִׁבְעִ֥ים (seventy) אֶ֙לֶף֙ (thousand) אִ֣ישׁ (men) סַבָּ֔ל (as burden bearers), וּשְׁמוֹנִ֥ים (and eighty) אֶ֛לֶף (thousand) אִ֖ישׁ (men) חֹצֵ֣ב (as hewers) בָּהָ֑ר (in the hill country), וּמְנַצְּחִ֣ים (and overseers) עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (over them) שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (three) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand) וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) מֵאֽוֹת׃פ (hundred).

3  וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (And sent) שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה (Solomon) אֶל־ (to) חוּרָ֥ם (Huram) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) צֹ֖ר (of Tyre), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying),

כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (Do as) עָשִׂ֙יתָ֙ (you did) עִם־ (with) דָּוִ֣יד (David) אָבִ֔י (my father) וַתִּֽשְׁלַֽח־ (and sent) ל֣וֹ (him) אֲרָזִ֔ים (cedars) לִבְנֽוֹת־ (to build) ל֥וֹ (himself) בַ֖יִת (a house) לָשֶׁ֥בֶת (to dwell) בּֽוֹ׃ (in it). 4  הִנֵּה֩ (Behold), אֲנִ֨י (I) בֽוֹנֶה־ (am building) בַּ֜יִת (a house) לְשֵׁ֣ם׀ (for the Name) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֗י (my God) לְהַקְדִּ֣ישׁ (to consecrate) ל֡וֹ (to Him), לְהַקְטִ֣יר (to burn) לְפָנָ֣יו (before His face) קְטֹֽרֶת־ (incense) סַמִּים֩ (of spices) וּמַעֲרֶ֨כֶת (and for showbread) תָּמִ֤יד (continual), וְעֹלוֹת֙ (and for the burnt offerings) לַבֹּ֣קֶר (at the morning) וְלָעֶ֔רֶב (and at the evening), לַשַּׁבָּתוֹת֙ (on the Sabbaths), וְלֶ֣חֳדָשִׁ֔ים (and on the New Moons), וּֽלְמוֹעֲדֵ֖י (and at appointed times) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (our God). לְעוֹלָ֖ם (Forever) זֹ֥את (this) עַל־ (is upon) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

5  וְהַבַּ֛יִת (And the temple) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I) בוֹנֶ֖ה (am building) גָּד֑וֹל (will be great), כִּֽי־ (for) גָד֥וֹל (is greater) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (our God) מִכָּל־ (than all) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (the gods). 6  וּמִ֤י (And who) יַעֲצָר־ (can keep) כֹּ֙חַ֙ (strength) לִבְנֽוֹת־ (to build) ל֣וֹ (unto Him) בַ֔יִת (a temple), כִּ֧י (since) הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם (the heavens), וּשְׁמֵ֥י (and the heavens) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (of heavens), לֹ֣א (not) יְכַלְכְּלֻ֑הוּ (can contain Him)? וּמִ֤י (And who) אֲנִי֙ (am I) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) אֶבְנֶה־ (I should build) לּ֣וֹ (unto Him) בַ֔יִת (a temple), כִּ֖י (for) אִם־ (but) לְהַקְטִ֥יר (to burn sacrifices) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before Him)?

7  וְעַתָּ֡ה (And now) שְֽׁלַֽח־ (send) לִ֣י (to me) אִישׁ־ (a man) חָכָ֡ם (skillful) לַעֲשׂוֹת֩ (to work) בַּזָּהָ֨ב (in the gold), וּבַכֶּ֜סֶף (and in the silver), וּבַנְּחֹ֣שֶׁת (and in the bronze), וּבַבַּרְזֶ֗ל (and in the iron), וּבָֽאַרְגְּוָן֙ (and in the purple) וְכַרְמִ֣יל (and crimson) וּתְכֵ֔לֶת (and blue), וְיֹדֵ֖עַ (and who has skill) לְפַתֵּ֣חַ (in engraving) פִּתּוּחִ֑ים (engravings) עִם־ (with) הַֽחֲכָמִ֗ים (the wise) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who are) עִמִּי֙ (with me) בִּֽיהוּדָ֣ה (in Judah) וּבִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (and in Jerusalem), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) הֵכִ֖ין (prepared) דָּוִ֥יד (David) אָבִֽי׃ (my father).

8  וּֽשְׁלַֽח־ (And send) לִי֩ (to me) עֲצֵ֨י (trees), אֲרָזִ֜ים (cedar) בְּרוֹשִׁ֣ים (and cypress) וְאַלְגּוּמִּים֮ (and algums) מֵֽהַלְּבָנוֹן֒ (from Lebanon), כִּ֚י (for) אֲנִ֣י (I) יָדַ֔עְתִּי (know) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ (your servants) יֽוֹדְעִ֔ים (know how) לִכְר֖וֹת (to cut) עֲצֵ֣י (trees) לְבָנ֑וֹן (of Lebanon). וְהִנֵּ֥ה (And behold), עֲבָדַ֖י (my servants will be) עִם־ (with) עֲבָדֶֽיךָ׃ (your servants), 9  וּלְהָכִ֥ין (and to prepare) לִ֛י (for me) עֵצִ֖ים (trees) לָרֹ֑ב (in abundance), כִּ֥י (because) הַבַּ֛יִת (the house) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I) בוֹנֶ֖ה (am building) גָּד֥וֹל (is great) וְהַפְלֵֽא׃ (and wonderful). 10  וְהִנֵּ֣ה (And behold), לַֽחֹטְבִ֣ים׀ (to the wood cutters) לְֽכֹרְתֵ֣י׀ (cutting) הָעֵצִ֡ים (the trees) נָתַתִּי֩ (I will give) חִטִּ֨ים׀ (wheat) מַכּ֜וֹת (ground), לַעֲבָדֶ֗יךָ (to your servants) כֹּרִים֙ (cors) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (twenty) אֶ֔לֶף (thousand), וּשְׂעֹרִ֕ים (and barley) כֹּרִ֖ים (cors) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (twenty) אָ֑לֶף (thousand), וְיַ֗יִן (and wine) בַּתִּים֙ (baths) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (twenty) אֶ֔לֶף (thousand), וְשֶׁ֕מֶן (and oil) בַּתִּ֖ים (baths) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) אָֽלֶף׃פ (thousand).

Hiram’s Reply to Solomon
(1 Kings 5:7–12)

11  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And answered) חוּרָ֤ם (Huram) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) צֹר֙ (of Tyre) בִּכְתָ֔ב (in writing), וַיִּשְׁלַ֖ח (and he sent) אֶל־ (to) שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (Solomon):

בְּאַהֲבַ֤ת (In the love) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֶת־ (-) עַמּ֔וֹ (to His people), נְתָנְךָ֥ (He has set you) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (over them) מֶֽלֶךְ׃ (as king).

12  וַיֹּאמֶר֮ (And said) חוּרָם֒ (Huram):

בָּר֤וּךְ (Blessed be) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) עָשָׂ֔ה (made) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (the heavens) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (for) נָתַן֩ (He has given) לְדָוִ֨יד (to David) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) בֵּ֣ן (a son) חָכָ֗ם (wise), יוֹדֵ֙עַ֙ (endowed) שֵׂ֣כֶל (with prudence) וּבִינָ֔ה (and understanding), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) יִבְנֶה־ (will build) בַּ֙יִת֙ (a temple) לַיהוָ֔ה (for YHWH) וּבַ֖יִת (and a house) לְמַלְכוּתֽוֹ׃ (for his kingdom).

13  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And) שָׁלַ֧חְתִּי (I have sent) אִישׁ־ (a man) חָכָ֛ם (wise), יוֹדֵ֥עַ (knowing) בִּינָ֖ה (with understanding) לְחוּרָ֥ם (Huram-) אָבִֽי׃ (abi), 14  בֶּן־ (son) אִשָּׁ֞ה (of a woman) מִן־ (of) בְּנ֣וֹת (the daughters) דָּ֗ן (of Dan) וְאָבִ֣יו (and his father) אִישׁ־ (a man) צֹרִ֡י (of Tyre), יוֹדֵ֡עַ (skilled) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to work) בַּזָּֽהָב־ (in the gold), וּ֠בַכֶּסֶף (and in the silver), בַּנְּחֹ֨שֶׁת (in the bronze), בַּבַּרְזֶ֜ל (in the iron), בָּאֲבָנִ֣ים (in the stones), וּבָעֵצִ֗ים (and in the wood), בָּאַרְגָּמָ֤ן (in purple) בַּתְּכֵ֙לֶת֙ (and in blue) וּבַבּ֣וּץ (and in fine linen) וּבַכַּרְמִ֔יל (and in crimson), וּלְפַתֵּ֙חַ֙ (and to engrave) כָּל־ (any) פִּתּ֔וּחַ (engraving), וְלַחְשֹׁ֖ב (and to accomplish) כָּל־ (any) מַחֲשָׁ֑בֶת (device) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) יִנָּֽתֶן־ (may be given) לוֹ֙ (to him) עִם־ (with) חֲכָמֶ֔יךָ (your wise ones), וְֽחַכְמֵ֔י (and with wise ones) אֲדֹנִ֖י (of my lord) דָּוִ֥יד (David) אָבִֽיךָ׃ (your father).

15  וְ֠עַתָּה (And now) הַחִטִּ֨ים (the wheat), וְהַשְּׂעֹרִ֜ים (and the barley), הַשֶּׁ֤מֶן (the oil), וְהַיַּ֙יִן֙ (and the wine), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (of which) אָמַ֣ר (has spoken) אֲדֹנִ֔י (my lord), יִשְׁלַ֖ח (let him send) לַעֲבָדָֽיו׃ (to his servants). 16  וַ֠אֲנַחְנוּ (And we) נִכְרֹ֨ת (will cut) עֵצִ֤ים (trees) מִן־ (from) הַלְּבָנוֹן֙ (Lebanon), כְּכָל־ (according to all) צָרְכֶּ֔ךָ (your need), וּנְבִיאֵ֥ם (and we will bring it) לְךָ֛ (to you) רַפְסֹד֖וֹת (in rafts) עַל־ (by) יָ֣ם (sea) יָפ֑וֹ (to Joppa), וְאַתָּ֛ה (and you) תַּעֲלֶ֥ה (will bring up) אֹתָ֖ם (them) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃פ (to Jerusalem).

17  וַיִּסְפֹּ֣ר (And numbered) שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (Solomon) כָּל־ (all) הָאֲנָשִׁ֤ים (the men), הַגֵּירִים֙ (the sojourners) אֲשֶׁר֙ (who) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (were in the land) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) הַסְּפָ֔ר (the census) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (in which) סְפָרָ֖ם (had numbered them) דָּוִ֣יד (David) אָבִ֑יו (his father). וַיִּמָּצְא֗וּ (And they were found to be) מֵאָ֤ה (a hundred) וַחֲמִשִּׁים֙ (and fifty) אֶ֔לֶף (thousand) וּשְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (and three) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand) וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) מֵאֽוֹת׃ (hundred). 18  וַיַּ֨עַשׂ (And he made) מֵהֶ֜ם (of them) שִׁבְעִ֥ים (seventy) אֶ֙לֶף֙ (thousand) סַבָּ֔ל (porters), וּשְׁמֹנִ֥ים (and eighty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) חֹצֵ֣ב (stonecutters) בָּהָ֑ר (in the mountain), וּשְׁלֹ֤שֶׁת (and three) אֲלָפִים֙ (thousand) וְשֵׁ֣שׁ (and six) מֵא֔וֹת (hundred) מְנַצְּחִ֖ים (overseers) לְהַעֲבִ֥יד (to make work) אֶת־ (-) הָעָֽם׃ (the people).
