Shem (name), Ham (hot), and Japheth (expand). 5The sons of Japheth (expand): Gomer (complete), Magog (land of Gog), Madai (middle land), Javan (Greece), Tubal (brought), Meshech (drawing out), and Tiras (desire). 6The sons of Gomer (complete): Ashkenaz, Riphath [Diphath],b and Togarmah (You will break her). 7And the sons of Javan (Greece): Elishah (God saves), Tarshish (yellow jasper), the Kittites (bruisers), and the Rodanites (leaders). 8The sons of Ham (hot): Cush (black), Mizraim (land of bondage), Put (a bow), and Canaan (lowland). 9The sons of Cush (black): Seba (drink you), Havilah (circle), Sabta (Sabtah),c Raamah (horse's mane), and Sabteca (striking). The sons of Raamah: Sheba (seven) and Dedan (low country). 10Cush (black) was the father of Nimrod (rebellion), who began to be a mighty one (who established himself as a mighty warrior)d on the earth. 11Mizraim (land of bondage) was the father of the Ludites (to the firebrands), the Anamites (affliction of the waters), the Lehabites (flames), the Naphtuhites (openings), 12the Pathrusites, the Casluhites (fortified) (from whom the Philistines (immigrants) came), and the Caphtorites.e 13And Canaan (lowland) was the father of Sidon (hunting) his firstborn (of the Sidonians, the foremost),f and of the Hittites \and of Heth/,g 14the Jebusites (Jerusalemites), the Amorites (sayers), the Girgashites (dwelling on clay), 15the Hivites (villagers), the Arkites, the Sinites, 16the Arvadites (I shall break loose), the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. 17The sons of Shem (name): Elam (eternity), Asshur (a step), Arphaxad (I fail as the breast), Lud (strife), and Aram. The sons of Aram:h Uz (wooded), Hul (circle), Gether (fear), and Meshech (Mash).i 18Arphaxad (I fail as the breast) was the father of Shelah (sprout), and Shelah was the father of Eber (the region beyond). 19Two sons were born to Eber (the region beyond): One was named Peleg (division),j because in his days the earth was divided, and his brother was named Joktan (smallness). 20And Joktan (smallness) was the father of Almodad (not measured), Sheleph (a drawing forth), Hazarmaveth (village of death), Jerah (new moon), 21Hadoram (noble honor), Uzal (I shall be flooded), Diklah (palm grove), 22Obal [Ebal],k Abimael (my father is God), Sheba (seven), 23Ophir (reducing to ashes), Havilah (circle), and Jobab (a desert). All these were sons of Joktan (smallness). 24So from Shem (name) came Arphaxad [Cainan,], Shelah,l 25Eber (the region beyond), Peleg (division), Reu (friend), 26Serug (branch), Nahor (snorting), Terah (station), 27and Abram (exalted father) (that is, Abraham (father of many)). The Descendants of Abraham 28The sons of Abraham (father of many) were Isaac (he laughs) and Ishmael (God hears). 29These are their genealogies: Nebaioth (heights) the firstborn of Ishmael (God hears), then Kedar (dark), Adbeel (chastened of God), Mibsam (sweet odor), 30Mishma (a hearing), Dumah (silence), Massa (burden), Hadad (mighty), Tema (desert), 31Jetur (enclosed), Naphish (refreshment), and Kedemah (original). These were the sons of Ishmael (God hears). 32The sons born to Keturah (incense), Abraham’s (father of many) concubine: Zimran (musician), Jokshan (snarer), Medan (contention), Midian (strife), Ishbak (he releases), and Shuah (wealth). The sons of Jokshan: Sheba (seven) and Dedan (low country). 33The sons of Midian (strife): Ephah (gloomy), Epher (a calf), Hanoch (dedicated), Abida (my father knows), and Eldaah (God has known). All of these were Keturah’s (incense) sons. 34Abraham (father of many) was the father of Isaac (he laughs). The sons of Isaac: Esau (hairy) and Israel (he wrestles with God). The Descendants of Esau 35The sons of Esau (hairy): Eliphaz (my God is gold), Reuel (friend of God), Jeush (He hurries to aid), Jalam (concealed), and Korah (bald). 36The sons of Eliphaz (my God is gold): Teman (south), Omar (speaker / eloquent), Zepho [Zephi],m Gatam (a burnt valley), and Kenaz (hunter); and by Timna (restrained), Amalek (dweller in a valley). 37The sons of Reuel (friend of God): Nahath (rest), Zerah (rising), Shammah (astonishment), and Mizzah (fear). The Descendants of Seir 38The sons of Seir (shaggy): Lotan (covering), Shobal (flowing), Zibeon (dyed), Anah (answer), Dishon (thresher), Ezer (treasure), and Dishan. 39The sons of Lotan (covering): Hori (cave dweller) and Homam (Hemam).n Timna (restrained) was Lotan’s sister. 40The sons of Shobal (flowing): Alvan [Alian],o Manahath (rest), Ebal (stone), Shepho [Shephi],p and Onam (vigorous). The sons of Dishon: Hemdan [Hamran],r Eshban (fire of discernment), Ithran (advantage), and Cheran (lyre). 42The sons of Ezer (treasure): Bilhan (their decrepitude), Zaavan (troubled), and Akan [Jaakan].s The sons of Dishan (thresher): Uz (wooded) and Aran (joyous). The Kings of Edom 43These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom (red) before any king reigned over the Israelites (before an Israelite king ruled over them):t Bela (destruction) son of Beor (burning). His city was named Dinhabah (give judgement). 44When Bela (destruction) died, Jobab (a desert) son of Zerah (rising) from Bozrah (sheepfold / fortress) reigned in his place. 45When Jobab (a desert) died, Husham (haste) from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. 46When Husham (haste) died, Hadad (mighty) son of Bedad (solitary), who defeated Midian (strife) in the country of Moab (of his father), reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith (ruins). 47When Hadad (mighty) died, Samlah (garment) from Masrekah (vineyard of noble vines) reigned in his place. 48When Samlah (garment) died, Shaul (desired) from Rehoboth (broad places) on the Euphrates \the River/u reigned in his place. 49When Shaul (desired) died, Baal-hanan (Baal is gracious) son of Achbor (mouse) reigned in his place. 50When Baal-hanan (Baal is gracious) died, Hadad (mighty) reigned in his place. His city was named Pau [Pai],v and his wife’s name was Mehetabel (favored of God) daughter of Matred (pushing forward), the daughter of Me-zahab (waters of gold). 51Then Hadad (mighty) died. Now the chiefs of Edom were (red) Timna (restrained), Alvah (evil), Jetheth (a nail), 52Oholibamah (tent of the high place), Elah (An oak), Pinon (darkness), 53Kenaz (hunter), Teman (south), Mibzar (fortress), 54Magdiel (prince of God), and Iram (belonging to a city). These were the chiefs of Edom (red).
