In the biblical context, "wonder-workers" refers to individuals who perform miraculous acts or signs that demonstrate divine power and authority. These acts are often referred to as "wonders" or "miracles" and serve to authenticate the message and mission of God's chosen servants. The Bible provides numerous accounts of such individuals, both in the Old and New Testaments, who were empowered by God to perform extraordinary deeds.

Old Testament Wonder-workers

1. Moses: One of the most prominent wonder-workers in the Old Testament, Moses was chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Through Moses, God performed numerous miracles, including the ten plagues (Exodus 7-12), the parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-22), and the provision of manna and water in the wilderness (Exodus 16-17). These acts demonstrated God's power and faithfulness to His covenant people.

2. Elijah: The prophet Elijah performed several miracles that affirmed his role as a prophet of the Lord. Notable among these was the calling down of fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice on Mount Carmel, proving the power of the God of Israel over the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:36-39). Elijah also raised the widow's son from the dead (1 Kings 17:21-22) and was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:11).

3. Elisha: As the successor to Elijah, Elisha performed many miracles, including the purification of the waters of Jericho (2 Kings 2:21-22), the multiplication of the widow's oil (2 Kings 4:1-7), and the raising of the Shunammite's son (2 Kings 4:32-35). These acts served to confirm his prophetic authority and God's ongoing presence with Israel.

New Testament Wonder-workers

1. Jesus Christ: The ultimate wonder-worker, Jesus performed numerous miracles that revealed His divine nature and authority. These included healing the sick (Matthew 8:16-17), raising the dead (John 11:43-44), calming storms (Mark 4:39), and feeding thousands with a few loaves and fish (Matthew 14:19-21). Jesus' miracles were signs of the coming Kingdom of God and His identity as the Messiah. As stated in John 20:30-31 , "Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name."

2. The Apostles: Following Jesus' ascension, the apostles continued to perform miracles through the power of the Holy Spirit. Peter and John healed a lame man at the temple gate (Acts 3:6-8), and many signs and wonders were performed by the apostles among the people (Acts 5:12). The apostle Paul also performed miracles, such as healing the sick and casting out demons (Acts 19:11-12), which served to validate his apostolic ministry and the message of the Gospel.

Purpose and Significance

The purpose of miracles and wonders in the biblical narrative is multifaceted. They serve to confirm the divine calling and authority of God's messengers, demonstrate God's power and compassion, and provide a foretaste of the restoration and redemption that God promises to His people. As signs, they point beyond themselves to the greater reality of God's presence and activity in the world, inviting faith and obedience from those who witness them.
