Definition and Overview:
Proper stewardship refers to the responsible management and care of resources, talents, and opportunities entrusted to individuals by God. It encompasses the use of time, money, abilities, and the environment in a way that honors God and furthers His kingdom. The concept of stewardship is deeply rooted in the biblical narrative, beginning with the creation account and extending throughout Scripture.

Biblical Foundation:
The principle of stewardship is first introduced in Genesis 1:28, where God commands humanity to "fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth" . This mandate establishes humans as caretakers of God's creation, responsible for its cultivation and preservation.

In the New Testament, Jesus frequently addresses stewardship in His parables. The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) illustrates the expectation that individuals use their God-given resources wisely and productively. The master commends the servants who multiply their talents, saying, "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:21), highlighting the reward for faithful stewardship.

Financial Stewardship:
The Bible provides guidance on the management of financial resources. Proverbs 3:9 instructs, "Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your harvest" , emphasizing the importance of prioritizing God in financial matters. The practice of tithing, as seen in Malachi 3:10, is a tangible expression of trust in God's provision and a means of supporting the work of the church.

The Apostle Paul, in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, encourages believers to give generously and cheerfully, stating, "Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver" . This passage underscores the attitude of the heart in financial stewardship.

Stewardship of Time and Talents:
Ephesians 5:15-16 exhorts believers to "walk circumspectly, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil" . This call to make the most of every opportunity reflects the importance of time management in the life of a Christian steward.

The Apostle Peter, in 1 Peter 4:10, writes, "As good stewards of the manifold grace of God, each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another" . This directive highlights the responsibility to employ one's talents and spiritual gifts in service to others, thereby contributing to the body of Christ.

Environmental Stewardship:
The biblical mandate for environmental stewardship is rooted in the creation narrative, where humanity is tasked with caring for the earth. Psalm 24:1 declares, "The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein" , reminding believers of God's ownership and their role as caretakers.

Romans 8:19-21 speaks of creation's longing for redemption, indicating that proper stewardship involves working towards the restoration and preservation of the natural world. This stewardship is an act of worship and obedience to the Creator.

Accountability and Reward:
Scripture teaches that stewards are accountable to God for their management of His resources. Romans 14:12 states, "So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God" , emphasizing personal responsibility. The Parable of the Unjust Steward (Luke 16:1-13) further illustrates the consequences of mismanagement and the importance of faithfulness.

Revelation 22:12 promises a reward for those who have been faithful stewards: "Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one according to what he has done" . This assurance of divine recompense motivates believers to pursue proper stewardship in all areas of life.
