Proper Use of Resources

The concept of the proper use of resources is deeply embedded in biblical teachings, emphasizing stewardship, generosity, and responsibility. The Bible provides numerous examples and instructions on how believers are to manage the resources entrusted to them by God, including time, talents, and material wealth.

Stewardship

The principle of stewardship is foundational to understanding the proper use of resources. In Genesis 1:28 , God commands humanity to "fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth." This mandate establishes humans as stewards of God's creation, responsible for managing it wisely and sustainably.

The parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30 further illustrates the importance of stewardship. In this parable, a master entrusts his servants with varying amounts of money, expecting them to invest and multiply it. The servants who wisely invest are rewarded, while the one who buries his talent is reprimanded. This account underscores the expectation that believers should use their resources to produce fruit and further God's kingdom.

Generosity

Generosity is a key aspect of the proper use of resources. Proverbs 11:24-25 states, "One gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds what is right, only to become poor. A generous soul will prosper, and he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." This passage highlights the paradoxical truth that generosity leads to greater blessing, both spiritually and materially.

The New Testament reinforces this principle. In 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 , Paul writes, "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver." This teaching encourages believers to give willingly and joyfully, trusting in God's provision.

Responsibility

The Bible also emphasizes the responsibility that comes with managing resources. In Luke 16:10-12 , Jesus teaches, "Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. If, then, you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will entrust you with true riches?" This passage highlights the importance of integrity and faithfulness in handling both small and large resources.

Additionally, the Bible warns against the misuse of resources. In James 5:1-5 , the wealthy are admonished for hoarding wealth and exploiting workers: "Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days." This warning serves as a reminder that resources should not be accumulated selfishly but used to serve others and honor God.

Contentment and Trust

Contentment and trust in God's provision are essential attitudes in the proper use of resources. Philippians 4:11-13 states, "I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances. I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound. I am accustomed to any and every situation—to being filled and being hungry, to having plenty and having need. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." This passage encourages believers to find contentment in Christ, regardless of their material circumstances.

In summary, the proper use of resources according to the Bible involves faithful stewardship, generous giving, responsible management, and a heart of contentment and trust in God's provision. These principles guide believers in using their resources to glorify God and serve others.
