In the biblical narrative, the Ammonites are frequently depicted as adversaries of Israel. The interactions between Israel and Ammon often involve conflict, and the prayers of the Israelites for deliverance from Ammonite oppression are significant in understanding the dynamics of divine intervention and answered prayer in the Old Testament.
One notable instance of answered prayer concerning the Ammonites is found in the Book of Judges. During the time of Jephthah, the Israelites were oppressed by the Ammonites due to their disobedience to God. The Israelites, recognizing their sin, cried out to the Lord for deliverance.
Judges 10:10-16 records this plea: "Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, 'We have sinned against You, for we have forsaken our God and served the Baals.' The LORD replied, 'Did I not save you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines...?'"
In response to their repentance and plea, God raised up Jephthah as a judge to deliver Israel. Jephthah, empowered by the Spirit of the Lord, led the Israelites to victory over the Ammonites.
Judges 11:32-33 states, "So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them, and the LORD delivered them into his hand. He struck them down from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith—twenty cities in all—and as far as Abel-keramim. So the Ammonites were subdued before the Israelites."
This account highlights the principle that God hears the prayers of His people when they turn back to Him in repentance and faith. The deliverance from the Ammonites was a direct answer to the Israelites' prayer, demonstrating God's mercy and faithfulness to His covenant people.
Another significant event involving the Ammonites and answered prayer is found in
2 Chronicles 20. King Jehoshaphat faced a formidable alliance of Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites. In his fear, Jehoshaphat sought the Lord, proclaiming a fast throughout Judah. The king's prayer, recorded in
2 Chronicles 20:6-12 , acknowledges God's sovereignty and pleads for divine intervention: "O LORD, God of our fathers, are You not the God who is in heaven? And do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand, and no one can stand against You."
In response to this earnest prayer, God assured Jehoshaphat through the prophet Jahaziel that the battle belonged to the Lord. The following day, as the people of Judah went out to face their enemies, they sang praises to God. The Lord set ambushes against the Ammonites and their allies, leading to their defeat without Judah having to fight.
2 Chronicles 20:22-23 describes the miraculous victory: "As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were defeated."
These accounts underscore the biblical theme that God answers the prayers of His people, especially when they seek Him with a humble and contrite heart. The deliverance from the Ammonites serves as a testament to God's power and His willingness to act on behalf of those who call upon His name in faith.
