Introduction

Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, was the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel following the division of the united monarchy after the reign of Solomon. His reign marked a significant turning point in the history of Israel, characterized by political and religious changes that had lasting impacts on the nation.

Background and Ascension to the Throne

Jeroboam was an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was Zeruah, a widow (1 Kings 11:26). He initially served as an official under King Solomon, overseeing the labor force of the house of Joseph. Recognized for his industriousness, Jeroboam was appointed by Solomon to a position of authority. However, due to Solomon's idolatry and the subsequent divine judgment pronounced by the prophet Ahijah, Jeroboam was chosen by God to rule over ten of the twelve tribes of Israel (1 Kings 11:29-31).

Division of the Kingdom

After Solomon's death, his son Rehoboam ascended to the throne. The northern tribes, dissatisfied with Rehoboam's harsh policies, rebelled and turned to Jeroboam for leadership. This led to the division of the united kingdom into the northern kingdom of Israel, under Jeroboam, and the southern kingdom of Judah, under Rehoboam (1 Kings 12:16-20).

Religious Innovations and Idolatry

Jeroboam's reign is notably marked by his establishment of alternative worship centers to prevent the people of Israel from returning to Jerusalem in Judah for religious observances. He set up golden calves in Bethel and Dan, declaring, "Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt" (1 Kings 12:28). This act of idolatry was a direct violation of the covenantal laws given to Israel and led the nation into sin.

Jeroboam also appointed non-Levitical priests and instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, similar to the Feast of Tabernacles in Judah, further solidifying his religious reforms (1 Kings 12:31-33).

Prophetic Condemnation

Jeroboam's actions drew the condemnation of prophets. A man of God from Judah prophesied against the altar at Bethel, predicting its destruction and the desecration of its priests (1 Kings 13:1-3). Despite witnessing miraculous signs, Jeroboam did not repent of his idolatry, leading to further divine judgment.

Jeroboam's Death

Jeroboam reigned for twenty-two years, and his reign was characterized by ongoing conflict with the house of Judah. His death is recorded in 1 Kings 14:20: "And the time that Jeroboam reigned was twenty-two years, and he rested with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his place" . His legacy was one of spiritual decline, as he "made Israel sin" (1 Kings 14:16), setting a precedent for future kings of Israel.

Legacy

Jeroboam's reign left a profound impact on the history of Israel. His establishment of idolatrous worship practices led to a pattern of apostasy that plagued the northern kingdom until its eventual destruction. The phrase "the sins of Jeroboam" became synonymous with idolatry and disobedience to God, serving as a cautionary tale for future generations.
