Spiritual neglect, as understood within the Christian tradition, refers to the failure to prioritize one's relationship with God, often resulting in a life that is disconnected from divine guidance and spiritual growth. The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings that highlight the consequences of such neglect, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a vibrant and active faith.

1. Loss of Fellowship with God: One of the primary consequences of spiritual neglect is the loss of intimate fellowship with God. In Revelation 2:4-5 , the church in Ephesus is admonished for abandoning their first love: "But I have this against you: You have abandoned your first love. Therefore, keep in mind how far you have fallen. Repent and perform the deeds you did at first." This passage underscores the importance of maintaining a fervent love for God, warning that neglect can lead to spiritual decline.

2. Hardened Heart: Spiritual neglect can result in a hardened heart, making it difficult to respond to God's voice. Hebrews 3:12-13 warns, "See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart of unbelief that turns away from the living God. But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness." This hardening can lead to a gradual drift away from faith and truth.

3. Lack of Spiritual Discernment: Neglecting spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, and fellowship can lead to a lack of discernment. In 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 , Paul addresses the Corinthians as "infants in Christ" due to their spiritual immaturity: "Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual, but as worldly—as infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for solid food. In fact, you are still not ready, for you are still worldly." This immaturity is a direct result of neglecting spiritual growth.

4. Vulnerability to Temptation: Without a strong spiritual foundation, individuals become more susceptible to temptation. Jesus, in Matthew 26:41 , advises His disciples, "Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak." Spiritual neglect weakens one's defenses against the lures of sin.

5. Spiritual Apathy and Lukewarmness: The church in Laodicea is a biblical example of the dangers of spiritual apathy. Revelation 3:15-16 states, "I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other! So because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to vomit you out of My mouth." This lukewarmness is a direct result of neglecting one's spiritual fervor and commitment.

6. Loss of Joy and Peace: Spiritual neglect often leads to a loss of the joy and peace that come from a close relationship with God. Psalm 51:10-12 reflects David's plea for restoration after his sin: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence; take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit." This passage highlights the connection between spiritual vitality and the experience of divine joy and peace.

7. Ineffectiveness in Witness: A neglected spiritual life can hinder one's ability to effectively witness to others. Jesus calls His followers to be the "light of the world" in Matthew 5:14-16 , but spiritual neglect can dim that light, reducing one's impact on the world.

The Bible consistently calls believers to vigilance in their spiritual lives, warning of the dangers and consequences of neglect. Through regular engagement with Scripture, prayer, and community, Christians are encouraged to cultivate a robust and active faith, avoiding the pitfalls of spiritual neglect.
