Definition and Concept:
Approaching holiness refers to the process by which believers draw near to the divine nature and presence of God, who is inherently holy. Holiness, in the biblical sense, signifies being set apart, pure, and morally blameless. It is both an attribute of God and a calling for His people. The pursuit of holiness involves a transformation of character and conduct, aligning oneself with God's will and purposes.

Biblical Foundation:
The call to holiness is rooted in the character of God Himself. Leviticus 19:2 states, "Speak to the entire congregation of the Israelites and tell them: ‘Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.’" This command is reiterated in the New Testament, where believers are urged to emulate God's holiness. 1 Peter 1:15-16 echoes this call: "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

The Nature of Holiness:
Holiness is both a positional and progressive reality for believers. Positionally, Christians are made holy through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 10:10 affirms, "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." Progressively, believers are called to grow in holiness through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. This involves a continual process of spiritual growth and moral purification.

Approaching God in Holiness:
Approaching God requires reverence and purity. Psalm 24:3-4 poses the question, "Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear deceitfully." This passage underscores the necessity of moral integrity and devotion to God as prerequisites for entering His presence.

The Role of Jesus Christ:
Jesus Christ is central to the believer's approach to holiness. Through His atoning sacrifice, He provides the means by which sinners are reconciled to a holy God. Hebrews 4:16 encourages believers to "approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Christ's intercession enables believers to draw near to God with assurance.

Practical Aspects of Approaching Holiness:
1. Obedience to God's Word: Holiness is cultivated through adherence to Scripture. Psalm 119:9 asks, "How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to Your word."

2. Prayer and Worship: Engaging in prayer and worship fosters a deeper relationship with God, drawing believers closer to His holiness. James 4:8 exhorts, "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you."

3. Community and Accountability: Fellowship with other believers provides encouragement and accountability in the pursuit of holiness. Hebrews 10:24-25 advises, "And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

4. Repentance and Confession: Regular confession and repentance are vital for maintaining a holy walk with God. 1 John 1:9 assures, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Challenges and Encouragement:
The pursuit of holiness is not without challenges. Believers face temptations and spiritual battles that can hinder their progress. However, the promise of God's presence and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit provide strength and encouragement. Philippians 2:12-13 reminds believers to "work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose."

Approaching holiness is a lifelong journey that reflects the believer's desire to honor God and reflect His character in a fallen world.
