Approach to God

The concept of approaching God is a central theme throughout the Bible, reflecting the relationship between the Creator and His creation. This entry explores the biblical understanding of how individuals and communities can draw near to God, emphasizing the means, attitudes, and implications of such an approach.

Old Testament Foundations

In the Old Testament, the approach to God is often mediated through the priesthood and sacrificial system. The Tabernacle, and later the Temple, served as the focal point for worship and communion with God. The Israelites were instructed to approach God with reverence and obedience, as seen in the detailed laws given to Moses. Leviticus 10:3 states, "By those who come near Me, I will be treated as holy, and before all the people I will be honored."

The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) was a significant event where the high priest entered the Holy of Holies to make atonement for the sins of the people (Leviticus 16). This annual event underscored the holiness of God and the need for purification before approaching Him.

The Role of Faith and Obedience

Throughout the Old Testament, faith and obedience are crucial in approaching God. Abraham's faith is highlighted as a model for believers, as seen in Genesis 15:6 : "Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness." The prophets consistently called the people to return to God with sincere hearts, emphasizing repentance and obedience as prerequisites for a genuine approach to God (Isaiah 55:6-7).

New Testament Fulfillment

The New Testament reveals the fulfillment of the Old Testament sacrificial system in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus provides the ultimate means of access to God. Hebrews 10:19-22 declares, "Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus... let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith."

Jesus Himself taught about approaching God with sincerity and humility. In the Sermon on the Mount, He instructed His followers to pray with genuine hearts, not for show (Matthew 6:5-6). The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18:9-14) further illustrates the importance of humility in approaching God.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in the believer's approach to God. The Spirit indwells believers, guiding them into truth and enabling them to cry out, "Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15). The Spirit intercedes for believers, helping them in their weakness and aligning their prayers with God's will (Romans 8:26-27).

Corporate Worship and Community

The New Testament also emphasizes the communal aspect of approaching God. Believers are encouraged to gather together for worship, prayer, and mutual edification. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges, "And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another."

Eschatological Hope

The ultimate approach to God is eschatological, pointing to the time when believers will dwell in God's presence eternally. Revelation 21:3 offers this hope: "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.'"

In summary, the approach to God in the Bible is multifaceted, involving faith, obedience, humility, and the mediating work of Jesus Christ. It is both a personal and communal journey, empowered by the Holy Spirit and culminating in the eternal presence of God.
