Anticipation of the Savior

The anticipation of the Savior is a central theme woven throughout the narrative of the Bible, beginning in the Old Testament and finding fulfillment in the New Testament. This expectation is rooted in the promise of redemption and restoration for humanity, which is marred by sin. The anticipation is characterized by prophetic declarations, typologies, and the longing of God's people for deliverance.

Genesis and the Protoevangelium

The anticipation of a Savior begins in the book of Genesis. After the fall of man, God pronounces a curse upon the serpent and provides the first glimpse of hope for redemption. Genesis 3:15, often referred to as the Protoevangelium, states: "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." This verse is seen as the first promise of a coming Redeemer who would defeat sin and Satan.

The Abrahamic Covenant

The anticipation continues with the covenant God makes with Abraham. In Genesis 12:3, God promises, "I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you, and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you." This promise is understood as a foreshadowing of the blessing that would come through Abraham's lineage, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.

Mosaic Law and Sacrificial System

The Mosaic Law and the sacrificial system further point to the need for a Savior. The sacrifices prescribed in the Law highlight the seriousness of sin and the necessity of atonement. Hebrews 10:1-4 explains that the Law is "only a shadow of the good things to come, not the realities themselves." The repeated sacrifices could not fully cleanse from sin, thus creating an anticipation for a perfect and final sacrifice.

Davidic Covenant

The anticipation of the Savior is also evident in the Davidic Covenant. In 2 Samuel 7:12-13, God promises David, "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever." This covenant is seen as a promise of a future King, the Messiah, who would reign eternally.

Prophetic Writings

The prophets of the Old Testament frequently spoke of the coming Savior. Isaiah 7:14 prophesies, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel." Isaiah 9:6-7 further describes the anticipated Savior: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

Micah 5:2 foretells the birthplace of the Savior: "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for Me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."

New Testament Fulfillment

The New Testament reveals the fulfillment of this anticipation in the person of Jesus Christ. The Gospels present Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah, fulfilling the prophecies and expectations of the Old Testament. In Matthew 1:21, the angel tells Joseph, "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins."

The anticipation of the Savior, deeply rooted in the Old Testament, finds its culmination in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is recognized as the promised Redeemer and King.
