Israel had passed through the Red Sea when God delivered them from Egypt (Exodus 14:21–22), and later crossed the Jordan as He brought them into the land He promised (Joshua 3:14–17). Waters often portray danger, disorder, and forces beyond human control, yet the God who rules the sea remains with His people within every threatening circumstance. Israel would endure exile and affliction, but neither foreign powers nor divine discipline would destroy the people God had chosen for His redemptive purposes. God later displayed such preserving power when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego remained unharmed in Nebuchadnezzar’s furnace, accompanied by one whose appearance was “like a son of the gods” (Daniel 3:25–27). The Lord’s protection rests on His sovereign faithfulness rather than Israel’s strength. Their trials would be real, including the coming Babylonian captivity, but they would not consume God’s covenant people or overturn His purposes. Hardship may refine faith, as gold is tested by fire, and God’s sustaining presence ensures that suffering cannot separate His people from His saving care.
