Ezekiel was made to see the full extent of the nation’s ruin, just as Moses was shown God’s works on Sinai and John was carried in the Spirit to receive revelation. Divine guidance prepared Ezekiel to proclaim a message grounded not in human optimism but in what the Lord alone would accomplish. Their multitude portrays a people scattered by judgment, stripped of strength, national security, and hope during the Babylonian exile. Israel’s covenant rebellion had brought the consequences warned of in Deuteronomy 28, yet the vast number of bones also anticipates the vast reach of God’s promised restoration. Israel had been brought low among the nations, with no power in itself to reverse its condition. Yet the place of deepest desolation becomes the place where the Lord displays His faithfulness to His covenant and His power over death. Israel’s (meaning “one who struggles with God”) exile was not a temporary setback that human effort could repair; it was a condition requiring the life-giving work of God. The dryness intensifies the coming miracle: the Lord would restore His people, put His Spirit within them, and establish them again in their land..
