Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’

Israel’s covenant life included the sobering reality that a parent’s sin could bring painful consequences upon later generations. Yet God rejects the idea that He condemns a righteous child for a guilty parent’s rebellion. The Lord judges each person according to his own response to God. Family patterns, inherited circumstances, and national sins may deeply affect a person’s life, but they do not remove personal moral responsibility or prevent genuine repentance.

Since the son has done what is just and right,

The son’s conduct demonstrates a deliberate break with his father’s evil way. Justice and righteousness include faithful treatment of others, refusal of idolatry and oppression, and practical obedience to the covenant God gave Israel. God does not require a child to repeat the sins of his household; He calls every generation to fear Him and walk in His ways.

Obedience is not merely outward conformity but a settled regard for God’s revealed will. The statutes of the Law directed Israel’s worship, public justice, family life, and care for the vulnerable. Such careful observance showed faith in the Lord and distinguished the righteous from those who presumed upon their ancestry while disregarding His commands.

God promises that the righteous man will not die under the judgment deserved by his father. In Ezekiel’s setting, this included preservation from the covenant judgments falling upon a rebellious nation. The principle also reveals God’s righteous character: He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked but calls each sinner to turn and live. Life ultimately finds its fullness in Christ, who bears the sin of those who trust Him and grants eternal life to all who believe.
