1And then Dinah, the daughter whom Leah bore to Jacob, went out to meet the daughters of the land. 2And when Shechem, son of Hamor, the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. 3And his soul clung to Dinah, Jacob’s daughter, and he loved the girl, and spoke kindly to her. 4And Shechem said to, Hamor, his father “Get me this young woman for my wife.” 5And when Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter, his sons were in the field with his cattle; and so Jacob said nothing until they returned. 6And Hamor, the father of Shechem, came to speak with Jacob. 7And when the sons of Jacob returned from the field and heard of it, they were grieved and very angry, because Shechem had raped their sister, Jacob's daughter. 8And Hamor said to them, “My son, Shechem, has his heart set upon your daughter; I ask you to give her to him as his wife. 9And intermarry with us - give your daughters to us, and take our daughters as your wives. 10And you shall settle among us. The land is open before you; dwell and trade in it, and acquire property in it.” 11And Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find grace in your eyes, and whatever you ask of me, I will give. 12Name the dowry price, and I will gladly pay it: but give me the girl for my wife.” 13But because he had defiled Dinah, their sister, the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father, Hamor, deceitfully: 14“We cannot do this - to give our sister to someone that is uncircumcised; that would be a disgrace to us. 15But we will consent to this: if you will be as we are - every male of you being circumcised - 16Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for our wives, and we will settle among you, and we will become one people. 17But if you will not consent to be circumcised; then we will take our daughter, and we will be gone.” 18And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem, his son. 19And the young man wasted no time in doing what they asked, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was the most honorable of all in the house of his father. 20And so Hamor and Shechem came to the gate of their city, and told the men of their city, 21“These men are peaceable with us; so let them live and trade in the land; for the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters as wives, and let us give them our daughters. 22But the men will only consent to dwell with us, and be one people: if every male among us becomes circumcised, as they are circumcised. 23Shall not their livestock, every animal and property of theirs be ours? So let us agree with their terms, and they will settle among us.” 24And all that went in and out of the gate of his city agreed with Hamor and Shechem; and every male in the city was circumcised. 25And on the third day, when they were all sore and in pain, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took swords, and boldly attacked the city, and killed all the males. 26And they killed Hamor and Shechem with the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and left. 27The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and looted the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28They took their sheep, oxen, donkeys, all that was in the city, and what was in the field - 29All their wealth, and took captive their little ones and their wives, and looted all that was in the houses. 30Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble upon me and made me obnoxious to the inhabitants of this land - the Canaanites and Perizzites. And I, being few in number, they shall join forces against me, and slay me - I and my household shall be destroyed.” 31And they replied, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
