A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. To the Chief Musician; set to chant mournfully. A didactic or reflective poem of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD, the God of my salvation, I have cried out [for help] by day and in the night before You. O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you. A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music. According to mahalath leannoth. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. LORD, you are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to you.
Let my prayer come before You and enter into Your presence; Incline Your ear to my cry! Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry! May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.
For my soul is full of troubles, And my life draws near the grave (Sheol, the place of the dead). For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death.
I am counted among those who go down to the pit (grave); I am like a man who has no strength [a mere shadow], I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am a man who has no strength, I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like one without strength.
Cast away [from the living] and abandoned among the dead, Like the slain who lie in a [nameless] grave, Whom You no longer remember, And they are cut off from Your hand. like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand. I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care.
You have laid me in the lowest pit, In dark places, in the depths. You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep. You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.
Your wrath has rested heavily upon me, And You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah. Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah Your wrath lies heavily on me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.
You have put my friends far from me; You have made me an object of loathing to them. I am shut up and I cannot go out. You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape; You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape;
My eye grows dim with sorrow. O LORD, I have called on You every day; I have spread out my hands to You [in prayer]. my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call upon you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you. my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you.
Will You perform wonders for the dead? Shall the departed spirits arise and praise You? Selah. Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do their spirits rise up and praise you?
Will Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave Or Your faithfulness in Abaddon (the underworld)? Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon? Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction?
Will Your wonders be known in the darkness? And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness [where the dead forget and are forgotten]? Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?
But I have cried out to You, O LORD, for help; And in the morning my prayer will come to You. But I, O LORD, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you. But I cry to you for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.
O LORD, why do You reject me? Why do You hide Your face from me? O LORD, why do you cast my soul away? Why do you hide your face from me? Why, LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me?
I was afflicted and close to death from my youth on; I suffer Your terrors; I am overcome. Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless. From my youth I have suffered and been close to death; I have borne your terrors and am in despair.
Your fierce wrath has swept over me; Your terrors have destroyed me. Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me. Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me.
They have surrounded me like flood waters all day long; They have completely encompassed me. They surround me like a flood all day long; they close in on me together. All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me.
Lover and friend You have placed far from me; My familiar friends are in darkness. You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me; my companions have become darkness. You have taken from me friend and neighbor— darkness is my closest friend.
