1 For the music director; a well-written song by the Korahites. As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God! As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 I thirst for God, for the living God. I say, |When will I be able to go and appear in God's presence?| My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
3 I cannot eat, I weep day and night; all day long they say to me, |Where is your God?| My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
4 I will remember and weep! For I was once walking along with the great throng to the temple of God, shouting and giving thanks along with the crowd as we celebrated the holy festival. These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival. These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.
5 Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention. Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
6 I am depressed, so I will pray to you while I am trapped here in the region of the upper Jordan, from Hermon, from Mount Mizar. and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
7 One deep stream calls out to another at the sound of your waterfalls; all your billows and waves overwhelm me. Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me. Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.
8 By day the LORD decrees his loyal love, and by night he gives me a song, a prayer to the living God. By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I will pray to God, my high ridge: |Why do you ignore me? Why must I walk around mourning because my enemies oppress me?| I say to God, my rock: “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”
10 My enemies' taunts cut into me to the bone, as they say to me all day long, |Where is your God?| As with a deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
11 Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention.
