1 For the music director; a psalm of David. How blessed is the one who treats the poor properly! When trouble comes, the LORD delivers him. Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the LORD delivers him; For the director of music. A psalm of David. Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the LORD delivers them in times of trouble.
2 May the LORD protect him and save his life! May he be blessed in the land! Do not turn him over to his enemies! the LORD protects him and keeps him alive; he is called blessed in the land; you do not give him up to the will of his enemies. The LORD protects and preserves them— they are counted among the blessed in the land— he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.
3 The LORD supports him on his sickbed; you completely heal him from his illness. The LORD sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health. The LORD sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.
4 As for me, I said: |O LORD, have mercy on me! Heal me, for I have sinned against you! As for me, I said, “O LORD, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against you!” I said, “Have mercy on me, LORD; heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
5 My enemies ask this cruel question about me, 'When will he finally die and be forgotten?' My enemies say of me in malice, “When will he die, and his name perish?” My enemies say of me in malice, “When will he die and his name perish?”
6 When someone comes to visit, he pretends to be friendly; he thinks of ways to defame me, and when he leaves he slanders me. And when one comes to see me, he utters empty words, while his heart gathers iniquity; when he goes out, he tells it abroad. When one of them comes to see me, he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander; then he goes out and spreads it around.
7 All who hate me whisper insults about me to one another; they plan ways to harm me. All who hate me whisper together about me; they imagine the worst for me. All my enemies whisper together against me; they imagine the worst for me, saying,
8 They say, 'An awful disease overwhelms him, and now that he is bed-ridden he will never recover.' They say, “A deadly thing is poured out on him; he will not rise again from where he lies.” “A vile disease has afflicted him; he will never get up from the place where he lies.”
9 Even my close friend whom I trusted, he who shared meals with me, has turned against me. Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me. Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.
10 As for you, O LORD, have mercy on me and raise me up, so I can pay them back!| But you, O LORD, be gracious to me, and raise me up, that I may repay them! But may you have mercy on me, LORD; raise me up, that I may repay them.
11 By this I know that you are pleased with me, for my enemy does not triumph over me. By this I know that you delight in me: my enemy will not shout in triumph over me. I know that you are pleased with me, for my enemy does not triumph over me.
12 As for me, you uphold me because of my integrity; you allow me permanent access to your presence. But you have upheld me because of my integrity, and set me in your presence forever. Because of my integrity you uphold me and set me in your presence forever.
13 The LORD God of Israel deserves praise in the future and forevermore! We agree! We agree! Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Amen and Amen. Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen.
