1 By David. Contend, Yahweh, with those who contend with me. Fight against those who fight against me. Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me! Of David. Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me.
2 Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for my help. Take hold of shield and buckler and rise for my help! Take up shield and armor; arise and come to my aid.
3 Brandish the spear and block those who pursue me. Tell my soul, “I am your salvation.” Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers! Say to my soul, “I am your salvation!” Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to me, “I am your salvation.”
4 Let those who seek after my soul be disappointed and brought to dishonor. Let those who plot my ruin be turned back and confounded. Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life! Let them be turned back and disappointed who devise evil against me! May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay.
5 Let them be as chaff before the wind, Yahweh’s angel driving them on. Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away! May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away;
6 Let their way be dark and slippery, Yahweh’s angel pursuing them. Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them! may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
7 For without cause they have hidden their net in a pit for me. Without cause they have dug a pit for my soul. For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me,
8 Let destruction come on him unawares. Let his net that he has hidden catch himself. Let him fall into that destruction. Let destruction come upon him when he does not know it! And let the net that he hid ensnare him; let him fall into it—to his destruction! may ruin overtake them by surprise— may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
9 My soul shall be joyful in Yahweh. It shall rejoice in his salvation. Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD, exulting in his salvation. Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation.
10 All my bones shall say, “Yahweh, who is like you, who delivers the poor from him who is too strong for him; yes, the poor and the needy from him who robs him?” All my bones shall say, “O LORD, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, the poor and needy from him who robs him?” My whole being will exclaim, “Who is like you, LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.”
11 Unrighteous witnesses rise up. They ask me about things that I don’t know about. Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I do not know. Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They reward me evil for good, to the bereaving of my soul. They repay me evil for good; my soul is bereft. They repay me evil for good and leave me like one bereaved.
13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul with fasting. My prayer returned into my own bosom. But I, when they were sick— I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting; I prayed with head bowed on my chest. Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14 I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother. I bowed down mourning, as one who mourns his mother. I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother; as one who laments his mother, I bowed down in mourning. I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother.
15 But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I didn’t know it. They tore at me, and didn’t cease. But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered; they gathered together against me; wretches whom I did not know tore at me without ceasing; But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; assailants gathered against me without my knowledge. They slandered me without ceasing.
16 Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed their teeth at me. like profane mockers at a feast, they gnash at me with their teeth. Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me.
17 Lord, how long will you look on? Rescue my soul from their destruction, my precious life from the lions. How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions! How long, Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their ravages, my precious life from these lions.
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly. I will praise you among many people. I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you. I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among the throngs I will praise you.
19 Don’t let those who are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me; neither let those who hate me without a cause wink their eyes. Let not those rejoice over me who are wrongfully my foes, and let not those wink the eye who hate me without cause. Do not let those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; do not let those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye.
20 For they don’t speak peace, but they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land. For they do not speak peace, but against those who are quiet in the land they devise words of deceit. They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land.
21 Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me. They said, “Aha! Aha! Our eye has seen it!” They open wide their mouths against me; they say, “Aha, Aha! Our eyes have seen it!” They sneer at me and say, “Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it.”
22 You have seen it, Yahweh. Don’t keep silent. Lord, don’t be far from me. You have seen, O LORD; be not silent! O Lord, be not far from me! LORD, you have seen this; do not be silent. Do not be far from me, Lord.
23 Wake up! Rise up to defend me, my God! My Lord, contend for me! Awake and rouse yourself for my vindication, for my cause, my God and my Lord! Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord.
24 Vindicate me, Yahweh my God, according to your righteousness. Don’t let them gloat over me. Vindicate me, O LORD, my God, according to your righteousness, and let them not rejoice over me! Vindicate me in your righteousness, LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me.
25 Don’t let them say in their heart, “Aha! That’s the way we want it!” Don’t let them say, “We have swallowed him up!” Let them not say in their hearts, “Aha, our heart’s desire!” Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up.” Do not let them think, “Aha, just what we wanted!” or say, “We have swallowed him up.”
26 Let them be disappointed and confounded together who rejoice at my calamity. Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me. Let them be put to shame and disappointed altogether who rejoice at my calamity! Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me! May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 Let those who favor my righteous cause shout for joy and be glad. Yes, let them say continually, “May Yahweh be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of his servant!” Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the LORD, who delights in the welfare of his servant!” May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, “The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant.”
28 My tongue shall talk about your righteousness and about your praise all day long. Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long. My tongue will proclaim your righteousness, your praises all day long.
