1 A Psalm of David. Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; Fight against those who fight against me. Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me! Of David. Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me.
2 Take hold of shield and buckler (small shield), And stand up for my help. Take hold of shield and buckler and rise for my help! Take up shield and armor; arise and come to my aid.
3 Draw also the spear and javelin to meet those who pursue me. Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.” Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers! Say to my soul, “I am your salvation!” Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to me, “I am your salvation.”
4 Let those be ashamed and dishonored who seek my life; Let those be turned back [in defeat] and humiliated who plot evil against me. Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life! Let them be turned back and disappointed who devise evil against me! May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay.
5 Let them be [blown away] like chaff before the wind [worthless, without substance], With the angel of the LORD driving them on. Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away! May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away;
6 Let their way be dark and slippery, With the angel of the LORD pursuing and harassing them. Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them! may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
7 For without cause they hid their net for me; Without cause they dug a pit [of destruction] for my life. For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me,
8 Let destruction come upon my enemy by surprise; Let the net he hid for me catch him; Into that very destruction let him fall. Let destruction come upon him when he does not know it! And let the net that he hid ensnare him; let him fall into it—to his destruction! may ruin overtake them by surprise— may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
9 Then my soul shall rejoice in the LORD; It shall rejoice in His salvation. Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD, exulting in his salvation. Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation.
10 All my bones will say, “LORD, who is like You, Who rescues the afflicted from him who is too strong for him [to resist alone], And the afflicted and the needy from him who robs him?” All my bones shall say, “O LORD, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, the poor and needy from him who robs him?” My whole being will exclaim, “Who is like you, LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.”
11 Malicious witnesses rise up; They ask me of things that I do not know. Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I do not know. Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They repay me evil for good, To the sorrow of my soul. They repay me evil for good; my soul is bereft. They repay me evil for good and leave me like one bereaved.
13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth (mourning garment); I humbled my soul with fasting, And I prayed with my head bowed on my chest. But I, when they were sick— I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting; I prayed with head bowed on my chest. Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14 I behaved as if grieving for my friend or my brother; I bowed down in mourning, as one who sorrows for his mother. I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother; as one who laments his mother, I bowed down in mourning. I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother.
15 But in my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered together [against me]; The slanderers whom I did not know gathered against me; They slandered and reviled me without ceasing. But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered; they gathered together against me; wretches whom I did not know tore at me without ceasing; But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; assailants gathered against me without my knowledge. They slandered me without ceasing.
16 Like godless jesters at a feast, They gnashed at me with their teeth [in malice]. like profane mockers at a feast, they gnash at me with their teeth. Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me.
17 LORD, how long will You look on [without action]? Rescue my life from their destructions, My only life from the young lions. How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions! How long, Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their ravages, my precious life from these lions.
18 I will give You thanks in the great congregation; I will praise You among a mighty people. I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you. I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among the throngs I will praise you.
19 Do not let those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me; Nor let those who hate me without cause wink their eye [maliciously]. Let not those rejoice over me who are wrongfully my foes, and let not those wink the eye who hate me without cause. Do not let those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; do not let those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye.
20 For they do not speak peace, But they devise deceitful words [half-truths and lies] against those who are quiet in the land. For they do not speak peace, but against those who are quiet in the land they devise words of deceit. They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land.
21 They open their mouths wide against me; They say, “Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it!” They open wide their mouths against me; they say, “Aha, Aha! Our eyes have seen it!” They sneer at me and say, “Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it.”
22 You have seen this, O LORD; do not keep silent. O Lord, do not be far from me. You have seen, O LORD; be not silent! O Lord, be not far from me! LORD, you have seen this; do not be silent. Do not be far from me, Lord.
23 Wake Yourself up, and arise to my right And to my cause, my God and my Lord. Awake and rouse yourself for my vindication, for my cause, my God and my Lord! Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord.
24 Judge me, O LORD my God, according to Your righteousness and justice; And do not let them rejoice over me. Vindicate me, O LORD, my God, according to your righteousness, and let them not rejoice over me! Vindicate me in your righteousness, LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me.
25 Do not let them say in their heart, “Aha, that is what we wanted!” Do not let them say, “We have swallowed him up and destroyed him.” Let them not say in their hearts, “Aha, our heart’s desire!” Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up.” Do not let them think, “Aha, just what we wanted!” or say, “We have swallowed him up.”
26 Let those be ashamed and humiliated together who rejoice at my distress; Let those be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves over me. Let them be put to shame and disappointed altogether who rejoice at my calamity! Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me! May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 Let them shout for joy and rejoice, who favor my vindication and want what is right for me; Let them say continually, “Let the LORD be magnified, who delights and takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.” Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the LORD, who delights in the welfare of his servant!” May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, “The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant.”
28 And my tongue shall declare Your righteousness (justice), And Your praise all the day long. Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long. My tongue will proclaim your righteousness, your praises all day long.
