1 A Psalm; a Song at the Dedication of the House (Temple). A Psalm of David. I will extol and praise You, O LORD, for You have lifted me up, And have not let my enemies rejoice over me. I will extol you, O LORD, for you have drawn me up and have not let my foes rejoice over me. A psalm. A song. For the dedication of the temple. Of David. I will exalt you, LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me.
2 O LORD my God, I cried to You for help, and You have healed me. O LORD my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.
3 O LORD, You have brought my life up from Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead); You have kept me alive, so that I would not go down to the pit (grave). O LORD, you have brought up my soul from Sheol; you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit. You, LORD, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit.
4 Sing to the LORD, O you His godly ones, And give thanks at the mention of His holy name. Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. Sing the praises of the LORD, you his faithful people; praise his holy name.
5 For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may endure for a night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
6 As for me, in my prosperity I said, “I shall never be moved.” As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.” When I felt secure, I said, “I will never be shaken.”
7 By Your favor and grace, O LORD, you have made my mountain stand strong; You hid Your face, and I was horrified. By your favor, O LORD, you made my mountain stand strong; you hid your face; I was dismayed. LORD, when you favored me, you made my royal mountain stand firm; but when you hid your face, I was dismayed.
8 I called to You, O LORD, And to the Lord I made supplication (specific request). To you, O LORD, I cry, and to the Lord I plead for mercy: To you, LORD, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy:
9 “What profit is there in my blood (death), if I go down to the pit (grave)? Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your faithfulness [to man]? “What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it tell of your faithfulness? “What is gained if I am silenced, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
10 “Hear, O LORD, be gracious and show favor to me; O LORD, be my helper.” Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me! O LORD, be my helper!” Hear, LORD, and be merciful to me; LORD, be my help.”
11 You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
12 That my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever. that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever! that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. LORD my God, I will praise you forever.
