For the music director, a psalm of David. O LORD, you examine me and know. O LORD, you have searched me and known me! For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. You have searched me, LORD, and you know me.
You know when I sit down and when I get up; even from far away you understand my motives. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest; you are aware of everything I do. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Certainly my tongue does not frame a word without you, O LORD, being thoroughly aware of it. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.
You squeeze me in from behind and in front; you place your hand on me. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.
Your knowledge is beyond my comprehension; it is so far beyond me, I am unable to fathom it. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Where can I go to escape your spirit? Where can I flee to escape your presence? Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there. If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be. If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I were to fly away on the wings of the dawn, and settle down on the other side of the sea, If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand would guide me, your right hand would grab hold of me. even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
If I were to say, |Certainly the darkness will cover me, and the light will turn to night all around me,| If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,”
even the darkness is not too dark for you to see, and the night is as bright as day; darkness and light are the same to you. even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
Certainly you made my mind and heart; you wove me together in my mother's womb. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing. You knew me thoroughly; I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
my bones were not hidden from you, when I was made in secret and sewed together in the depths of the earth. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb. All the days ordained for me were recorded in your scroll before one of them came into existence. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God! How vast is their sum total! How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!
If I tried to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. Even if I finished counting them, I would still have to contend with you. If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you. Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.
If only you would kill the wicked, O God! Get away from me, you violent men! Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God! O men of blood, depart from me! If only you, God, would slay the wicked! Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
They rebel against you and act deceitfully; your enemies lie. They speak against you with malicious intent; your enemies take your name in vain. They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.
O LORD, do I not hate those who hate you, and despise those who oppose you? Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? Do I not hate those who hate you, LORD, and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
I absolutely hate them, they have become my enemies! I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies. I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.
Examine me, and probe my thoughts! Test me, and know my concerns! Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any idolatrous tendency in me, and lead me in the reliable ancient path! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
