דֶּ֣לֶף ט֭וֹרֵד בְּי֣וֹם סַגְרִ֑יר וְאֵ֥שֶׁת [מדונים] (מִ֝דְיָנִ֗ים) נִשְׁתָּוָֽה׃ | A continual dripping on a rainy day and a quarrelsome wife are alike; | A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping of a leaky roof in a rainstorm; |
צֹפְנֶ֥יהָ צָֽפַן־ ר֑וּחַ וְשֶׁ֖מֶן יְמִינ֣וֹ יִקְרָֽא׃ | to restrain her is to restrain the wind or to grasp oil in one’s right hand. | restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand. |
בַּרְזֶ֣ל בְּבַרְזֶ֣ל יָ֑חַד וְ֝אִ֗ישׁ יַ֣חַד פְּנֵֽי־ רֵעֵֽהוּ׃ | Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. | As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. |
נֹצֵ֣ר תְּ֭אֵנָה יֹאכַ֣ל פִּרְיָ֑הּ וְשֹׁמֵ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣יו יְכֻבָּֽד׃ | Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who guards his master will be honored. | The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit, and whoever protects their master will be honored. |
כַּ֭מַּיִם הַפָּנִ֣ים לַפָּנִ֑ים כֵּ֤ן לֵֽב־ הָ֝אָדָ֗ם לָאָדָֽם׃ | As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man. | As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart. |
שְׁא֣וֹל [ואבדה] (וַ֭אֲבַדּוֹ) לֹ֣א תִשְׂבַּ֑עְנָה וְעֵינֵ֥י הָ֝אָדָ֗ם לֹ֣א תִשְׂבַּֽעְנָה׃ | Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied, and never satisfied are the eyes of man. | Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes. |
מַצְרֵ֣ף לַ֭כֶּסֶף וְכ֣וּר לַזָּהָ֑ב וְ֝אִ֗ישׁ לְפִ֣י מַהֲלָלֽוֹ׃ | The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise. | The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but people are tested by their praise. |
אִ֥ם תִּכְתּֽוֹשׁ־ אֶת־ הָאֱוִ֨יל ׀ בַּֽמַּכְתֵּ֡שׁ בְּת֣וֹךְ הָ֭רִיפוֹת בַּֽעֱלִ֑י לֹא־ תָס֥וּר מֵ֝עָלָ֗יו אִוַּלְתּֽוֹ׃ פ | Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain, yet his folly will not depart from him. | Though you grind a fool in a mortar, grinding them like grain with a pestle, you will not remove their folly from them. |
יָדֹ֣עַ תֵּ֭דַע פְּנֵ֣י צֹאנֶ֑ךָ שִׁ֥ית לִ֝בְּךָ֗ לַעֲדָרִֽים׃ | Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, | Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; |
כִּ֤י לֹ֣א לְעוֹלָ֣ם חֹ֑סֶן וְאִם־ נֵ֝֗זֶר לְד֣וֹר [דור] (וָדֽוֹר׃) | for riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations? | for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations. |
גָּלָ֣ה חָ֭צִיר וְנִרְאָה־ דֶ֑שֶׁא וְ֝נֶאֶסְפ֗וּ עִשְּׂב֥וֹת הָרִֽים׃ | When the grass is gone and the new growth appears and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered, | When the hay is removed and new growth appears and the grass from the hills is gathered in, |
כְּבָשִׂ֥ים לִלְבוּשֶׁ֑ךָ וּמְחִ֥יר שָׂ֝דֶ֗ה עַתּוּדִֽים׃ | the lambs will provide your clothing, and the goats the price of a field. | the lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats with the price of a field. |
וְדֵ֤י ׀ חֲלֵ֬ב עִזִּ֗ים לְֽ֭לַחְמְךָ לְלֶ֣חֶם בֵּיתֶ֑ךָ וְ֝חַיִּ֗ים לְנַעֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ | There will be enough goats’ milk for your food, for the food of your household and maintenance for your girls. | You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed your family and to nourish your female servants. |
