A word of YHWH that has been to Micah the Morashite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, kings of Judah, that he has seen concerning Samaria and Jerusalem: | The word of the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. | The word of the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah—the vision he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. |
Hear, O peoples, all of them! Attend, O earth, and its fullness, || And Lord YHWH is against you for a witness, || The Lord from His holy temple. | Hear, you peoples, all of you; pay attention, O earth, and all that is in it, and let the Lord GOD be a witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple. | Hear, you peoples, all of you, listen, earth and all who live in it, that the Sovereign LORD may bear witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple. |
For behold, YHWH is going out from His place, || And He has come down, || And has trodden on high places of earth. | For behold, the LORD is coming out of his place, and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth. | Look! The LORD is coming from his dwelling place; he comes down and treads on the heights of the earth. |
The mountains have been melted under Him, || And the valleys split themselves, || As wax from the presence of fire, || As waters cast down by a slope. | And the mountains will melt under him, and the valleys will split open, like wax before the fire, like waters poured down a steep place. | The mountains melt beneath him and the valleys split apart, like wax before the fire, like water rushing down a slope. |
For the transgression of Jacob [is] all this, || And for the sins of the house of Israel. What [is] the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? And what the high places of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem? | All this is for the transgression of Jacob and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? And what is the high place of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem? | All this is because of Jacob’s transgression, because of the sins of the people of Israel. What is Jacob’s transgression? Is it not Samaria? What is Judah’s high place? Is it not Jerusalem? |
“And I have set Samaria for a heap of the field, || For plantations of a vineyard, || And poured out into a valley her stones, || And her foundations I uncover. | Therefore I will make Samaria a heap in the open country, a place for planting vineyards, and I will pour down her stones into the valley and uncover her foundations. | “Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble, a place for planting vineyards. I will pour her stones into the valley and lay bare her foundations. |
And all her carved images are beaten down, || And all her wages are burned with fire, || And all her idols I make a desolation, || For from the wage of a harlot she gathered, and to the wage of a harlot they return.” | All her carved images shall be beaten to pieces, all her wages shall be burned with fire, and all her idols I will lay waste, for from the fee of a prostitute she gathered them, and to the fee of a prostitute they shall return. | All her idols will be broken to pieces; all her temple gifts will be burned with fire; I will destroy all her images. Since she gathered her gifts from the wages of prostitutes, as the wages of prostitutes they will again be used.” |
For this I lament and howl, || I go spoiled and naked, || I make a lamentation like dragons, || And a mourning like daughters of an ostrich. | For this I will lament and wail; I will go stripped and naked; I will make lamentation like the jackals, and mourning like the ostriches. | Because of this I will weep and wail; I will go about barefoot and naked. I will howl like a jackal and moan like an owl. |
For mortal [are] her wounds, || For it has come to Judah, || It has come to a gate of My people—to Jerusalem. | For her wound is incurable, and it has come to Judah; it has reached to the gate of my people, to Jerusalem. | For Samaria’s plague is incurable; it has spread to Judah. It has reached the very gate of my people, even to Jerusalem itself. |
In Gath do not tell—in Acco do not weep, || In Beth-Aphrah, roll yourself in dust. | Tell it not in Gath; weep not at all; in Beth-le-aphrah roll yourselves in the dust. | Tell it not in Gath; weep not at all. In Beth Ophrah roll in the dust. |
Pass over for you, O inhabitant of Shaphir, || Naked one of shame. The inhabitant of Zaanan has not gone out, || The lamentation of Beth-Ezel takes from you its standing. | Pass on your way, inhabitants of Shaphir, in nakedness and shame; the inhabitants of Zaanan do not come out; the lamentation of Beth-ezel shall take away from you its standing place. | Pass by naked and in shame, you who live in Shaphir. Those who live in Zaanan will not come out. Beth Ezel is in mourning; it no longer protects you. |
For the inhabitant of Maroth has stayed for good, || For calamity has come down from YHWH to the gate of Jerusalem. | For the inhabitants of Maroth wait anxiously for good, because disaster has come down from the LORD to the gate of Jerusalem. | Those who live in Maroth writhe in pain, waiting for relief, because disaster has come from the LORD, even to the gate of Jerusalem. |
Bind the chariot to a swift beast, O inhabitant of Lachish, || The beginning of sin [is] she to the daughter of Zion, || For in you have been found the transgressions of Israel. | Harness the steeds to the chariots, inhabitants of Lachish; it was the beginning of sin to the daughter of Zion, for in you were found the transgressions of Israel. | You who live in Lachish, harness fast horses to the chariot. You are where the sin of Daughter Zion began, for the transgressions of Israel were found in you. |
Therefore you give presents to Moresheth-Gath, || The houses of Achzib become a lying thing to the kings of Israel. | Therefore you shall give parting gifts to Moresheth-gath; the houses of Achzib shall be a deceitful thing to the kings of Israel. | Therefore you will give parting gifts to Moresheth Gath. The town of Akzib will prove deceptive to the kings of Israel. |
Yet I bring the possessor to you, O inhabitant of Mareshah, || The glory of Israel comes to Adullam. | I will again bring a conqueror to you, inhabitants of Mareshah; the glory of Israel shall come to Adullam. | I will bring a conqueror against you who live in Mareshah. The nobles of Israel will flee to Adullam. |
Make bald and shave, for your delightful sons, || Enlarge your baldness as an eagle, || For they have removed from you! | Make yourselves bald and cut off your hair, for the children of your delight; make yourselves as bald as the eagle, for they shall go from you into exile. | Shave your head in mourning for the children in whom you delight; make yourself as bald as the vulture, for they will go from you into exile. |
