1 When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him.
2 A man with a serious skin disease came and bowed down in front of him. The man said to Jesus, |Sir, if you're willing, you can make me clean.| And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
3 Jesus reached out, touched him, and said, |I'm willing. So be clean!| Immediately, his skin disease went away, and he was clean. And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.
4 Jesus said to him, |Don't tell anyone about this! Instead, show yourself to the priest. Then offer the sacrifice Moses commanded as proof to people that you are clean.| And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
5 When Jesus went to Capernaum, a Roman army officer came to beg him for help. When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help.
6 The officer said, |Sir, my servant is lying at home paralyzed and in terrible pain.| “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.”
7 Jesus said to him, |I'll come to heal him.| And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”
8 The officer responded, |Sir, I don't deserve to have you come into my house. But just give a command, and my servant will be healed. But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
9 As you know, I'm in a chain of command and have soldiers at my command. I tell one of them, 'Go!' and he goes, and another, 'Come!' and he comes. I tell my servant, 'Do this!' and he does it.| For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 Jesus was amazed when he heard this. He said to those who were following him, |I can guarantee this truth: I haven't found faith as great as this in anyone in Israel. When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.
11 I can guarantee that many will come from all over the world. They will eat with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
12 The citizens of that kingdom will be thrown outside into the darkness. People will cry and be in extreme pain there. while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
13 Jesus told the officer, |Go! What you believed will be done for you.| And at that moment the servant was healed. And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment. Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.
14 When Jesus went to Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law in bed with a fever. And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
15 Jesus touched her hand, and the fever went away. So she got up and prepared a meal for him. He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
16 In the evening the people brought him many who were possessed by demons. He forced the [evil] spirits out of people with a command and cured everyone who was sick. That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.
17 So what the prophet Isaiah had said came true: |He took away our weaknesses and removed our diseases.| This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.” This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”
18 Now, when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he ordered [his disciples] to cross to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.
19 A scribe came to him and said, |Teacher, I'll follow you wherever you go.| And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20 Jesus told him, |Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to sleep.| And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
21 Another disciple said to him, |Sir, first let me go to bury my father.| Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus told him, |Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.| And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.” But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
23 Jesus' disciples went with him as he left in a boat. And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.
24 Suddenly, a severe storm came across the sea. The waves were covering the boat. Yet, Jesus was sleeping. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.
25 So they woke him up, saying, |Lord! Save us! We're going to die!| And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 Jesus said to them, |Why do you cowards have so little faith?| Then he got up, gave an order to the wind and the sea, and the sea became very calm. And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27 The men were amazed and asked, |What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!| And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
28 When he arrived in the territory of the Gadarenes on the other side [of the Sea of Galilee], two men met him. They were possessed by demons and had come out of the tombs. No one could travel along that road because the men were so dangerous. And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.
29 They shouted, |Why are you bothering us now, Son of God? Did you come here to torture us before it is time?| And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”
30 A large herd of pigs was feeding in the distance. Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.
31 The demons begged Jesus, |If you're going to force us out, send us into that herd of pigs.| And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
32 Jesus said to them, |Go!| The demons came out and went into the pigs. Suddenly, the whole herd rushed down the cliff into the sea and died in the water. And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.
33 Those who took care of the pigs ran into the city. There they reported everything, especially about the men possessed by demons. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
34 Everyone from the city went to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their territory. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region. Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
