1 “[But] take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

4 so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
5 “When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. 6 But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7 In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 16 “When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be. but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. 27 Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
28 Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.
29 But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
30 If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith? But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?
31 So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’ Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
32 All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
33 But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
