1 Now after the birth of Jesus, which took place at Bethlehem in Judaea in the reign of King Herod, excitement was produced in Jerusalem by the arrival of certain Magi from the east, Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem
2 inquiring, "Where is the newly born king of the Jews? For we have seen his Star in the east, and have come here to do him homage." saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 Reports of this soon reached the king, and greatly agitated not only him but all the people of Jerusalem. When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 So he assembled all the High Priests and Scribes of the people, and anxiously asked them where the Christ was to be born. and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.
5 "At Bethlehem in Judaea," they replied; "for so it stands written in the words of the Prophet, They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 "'And thou, Bethlehem in the land of Judah, by no means the least honorable art thou among princely places in Judah! For from thee shall come a prince--one who shall be the Shepherd of My People Israel.'" “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” “’But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Thereupon Herod sent privately for the Magi and ascertained from them the exact time of the star's appearing. Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
8 He then directed them to go to Bethlehem, adding, "Go and make careful inquiry about the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and do him homage." And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After hearing what the king said, they went to Bethlehem, while, strange to say, the star they had seen in the east led them on until it came and stood over the place where the babe was. After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
10 When they saw the star, the sight filled them with intense joy. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
11 So they entered the house; and when they saw the babe with His mother Mary, they prostrated themselves and did Him homage, and opening their treasure-chests offered gifts to Him--gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
12 But being forbidden by God in a dream to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by a different route. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
13 When they were gone, and angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise: take the babe and His mother and escape to Egypt, and remain there till I bring you word. For Herod is about to make search for the child in order to destroy Him." Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
14 So Joseph roused himself and took the babe and His mother by night and departed into Egypt. And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
15 There he remained till Herod's death, that what the Lord had said through the Prophet might be fulfilled, "Out of Egypt I called My Son." and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
16 Then Herod, finding that the Magi had trifled with him, was furious, and sent and massacred all the boys under two years of age, in Bethlehem and all its neighbourhood, according to the date he had so carefully ascertained from the Magi. Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
17 Then were these words, spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, fulfilled, Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and bitter lamentation: It was Rachel bewailing her children, and she refused to be comforted because there were no more." “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.” “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
19 But after Herod's death an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said to him, But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
20 "Rise from sleep, and take the child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead." saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”
21 So he roused himself and took the child and His mother and came into the land of Israel. And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
22 But hearing that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod on the throne of Judaea, he was afraid to go there; and being instructed by God in a dream he withdrew into Galilee, But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee,
23 and went and settled in a town called Nazareth, in order that these words spoken through the Prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene." And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene. and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.
