1 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea when Herod was king. After Jesus' birth wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem. Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem
2 They asked, |Where is the one who was born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star rising and have come to worship him.| saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod and all Jerusalem heard about this, they became disturbed. When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 He called together all the chief priests and scribes and tried to find out from them where the Messiah was supposed to be born. and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.
5 They told him, |In Bethlehem in Judea. The prophet wrote about this: They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 Bethlehem in the land of Judah, you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah. A leader will come from you. He will shepherd my people Israel.| “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” “’But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Then Herod secretly called the wise men and found out from them exactly when the star had appeared. Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
8 As he sent them to Bethlehem, he said, |Go and search carefully for the child. When you have found him, report to me so that I may go and worship him too.| And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they started out. The star they had seen rising led them until it stopped over the place where the child was. After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
10 They were overwhelmed with joy to see the star. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
11 When they entered the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary. So they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
12 God warned them in a dream not to go back to Herod. So they left for their country by another road. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
13 After they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. The angel said to him, |Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, because Herod intends to search for the child and kill him.| Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
14 Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and left for Egypt that night. And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
15 He stayed there until Herod died. What the Lord had spoken through the prophet came true: |I have called my son out of Egypt.| and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
16 When Herod saw that the wise men had tricked him, he became furious. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys two years old and younger in or near Bethlehem. This matched the exact time he had learned from the wise men. Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
17 Then the words spoken through the prophet Jeremiah came true: Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 |A sound was heard in Ramah, the sound of crying in bitter grief. Rachel was crying for her children. She refused to be comforted because they were dead.| “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.” “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
19 After Herod was dead, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
20 The angel said to him, |Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to Israel. Those who tried to kill the child are dead.| saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”
21 Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to Israel. And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as king of Judea, Joseph was afraid to go there. Warned in a dream, he left for Galilee But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 and made his home in a city called Nazareth. So what the prophets had said came true: |He will be called a Nazarene.| And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene. and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.
