1 And He also said to His disciples, “A certain man was rich, who had a steward, and he was accused to him as scattering his goods; He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.
2 and having called him, he said to him, What [is] this I hear about you? Render the account of your stewardship, for you may not be steward any longer. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’
3 And the steward said in himself, What will I do, because my lord takes away the stewardship from me? I am not able to dig, I am ashamed to beg— And the manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. “The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg—
4 I have known what I will do, that, when I may be removed from the stewardship, they may receive me to their houses. I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’ I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’
5 And having called near each one of his lord’s debtors, he said to the first, How much do you owe to my lord? So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ “So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
6 And he said, One hundred baths of oil; and he said to him, Take your bill, and having sat down write fifty. He said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ “’Nine hundred gallons of olive oil,’ he replied. “The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’
7 Afterward to another he said, And you, how much do you owe? And he said, One hundred cors of wheat; and he says to him, Take your bill, and write eighty. Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ “Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’ “’A thousand bushels of wheat,’ he replied. “He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’
8 And the lord commended the unrighteous steward that he did prudently, because the sons of this age are more prudent than the sons of the light in respect to their generation. The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light. “The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.
9 And I say to you, make to yourselves friends out of the wealth of unrighteousness, that when you may fail, they may receive you into the continuous dwelling places. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings. I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
10 He who is faithful in the least, [is] also faithful in much; and he who in the least [is] unrighteous, is also unrighteous in much; “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.
11 if, then, in the unrighteous wealth you did not become faithful—who will entrust to you the true? If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?
12 And if in the other’s you did not become faithful—who will give to you your own? And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?
13 No servant is able to serve two lords, for either he will hate the one, and he will love the other; or one he will hold to, and of the other he will be heedless; you are not able to serve God and wealth.” No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
14 And also the Pharisees, being lovers of money, were hearing all these things, and were deriding Him, The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.
15 and He said to them, “You are those declaring yourselves righteous before men, but God knows your hearts; because that which is high among men [is] abomination before God; And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God. He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.
16 the Law and the Prophets [are] until John; since then the good news of the Kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone presses into it; “The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it. “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it.
17 and it is easier for the heaven and the earth to pass away, than one tittle to fall of the Law. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to become void. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.
18 Everyone who is sending his wife away, and marrying another, commits adultery; and everyone who is marrying her sent away from a husband commits adultery. “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
19 And—a certain man was rich, and was clothed in purple and fine linen, making merry sumptuously every day, “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.
20 and there was a certain poor man, by name Lazarus, who was laid at his porch, full of sores, And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores
21 and desiring to be filled from the crumbs that are falling from the table of the rich man; indeed, also the dogs, coming, were licking his sores. who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 And it came to pass, that the poor man died, and that he was carried away by the messengers into the bosom of Abraham—and the rich man also died, and was buried; The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.
23 and having lifted up his eyes in Hades, being in torments, he sees Abraham far off, and Lazarus in his bosom, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.
24 and having cried, he said, Father Abraham, deal kindly with me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and may cool my tongue, because I am distressed in this flame. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
25 And Abraham said, Child, remember that you received your good things in your life, and Lazarus in like manner the evil things, and now he is comforted, and you are distressed; But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
26 and besides all these things, between us and you a great chasm is fixed, so that they who are willing to go over from here to you are not able, nor do they pass through from there to us. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’
27 And he said, I ask, then, father, that you may send him to the house of my father, And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family,
28 for I have five brothers, so that he may thoroughly testify to them, that they also may not come to this place of torment. for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29 Abraham says to him, They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them; But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30 and he said, No, father Abraham, but if anyone from the dead may go to them, they will convert. And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ “’No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 And he said to him, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if one may rise out of the dead.” He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’” “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
