And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorite who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanite who were along the sea, heard that YHWH had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the face of the sons of Israel until they passed over, that their heart melted, and there was no longer a spirit in them, because of the face of the sons of Israel. | As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel. | Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites. |
At that time said YHWH to Joshua, “Make for yourself flint knives, and turn back and circumcise the sons of Israel the second time.” | At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.” | At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.” |
And Joshua made for himself flint knives, and he circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth. | So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth. | So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth. |
And this is the reason that Joshua circumcised them: All the people who came out of Egypt, males, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way after they had come out of Egypt. | And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way after they had come out of Egypt. | Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt. |
For all the people who came out were circumcised, and all the people born in the wilderness on the way as they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised. | Though all the people who came out had been circumcised, yet all the people who were born on the way in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised. | All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. |
For forty years the sons of Israel walked in the wilderness, until all the people of the men of war who came out of Egypt were consumed because they did not obey the voice of YHWH, whom YHWH swore to them that He would not show the land that YHWH had sworn to their fathers that He would give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey. | For the people of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD; the LORD swore to them that he would not let them see the land that the LORD had sworn to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey. | The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the LORD. For the LORD had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. |
And their sons, raised up in their place, Joshua circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way. | So it was their children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised. For they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way. | So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. |
And it came to pass, when they had finished circumcising all the nation, that they stayed in their places in the camp until they were healed. | When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed. | And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed. |
And YHWH said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you⁺.” And the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day. | And the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” And so the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day. | Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal to this day. |
And the sons of Israel camped in Gilgal and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. | While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. | On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. |
And they ate of the produce of the land on the day after the Passover, unleavened bread and roasted grain, on this same day. | And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. | The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. |
And the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten from the produce of the land, and the sons of Israel had no more manna, and they ate the food of the land of Canaan in that year. | And the manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land. And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year. | The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan. |
And it came to pass, in Joshua being by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand, and Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our enemies?” | When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” | Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” |
And He said, “Neither, for I, Commander of the army of YHWH, have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?” | And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the LORD. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” | “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?” |
And the Commander of the army of YHWH said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place on which you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so. | And the commander of the LORD’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so. | The commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so. |
