1 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
8 When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
14 You are my friends if you do what I command. You are my friends if you do what I command you. You are my friends if you do what I command.
15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.
17 This is my command: Love each other. These things I command you, so that you will love one another. This is my command: Love each other.
18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
20 Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.
21 They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the one who sent me. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.
22 They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23 Anyone who hates me also hates my Father. Whoever hates me hates my Father also. Whoever hates me hates my Father as well.
24 If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.
25 This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures: ‘They hated me without cause.’ But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’
26 “But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.
27 And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
