THEN Job answered and said, | Then Job answered and said: | Then Job replied: |
Oh that my grief were weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances against it! | “Oh that my vexation were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances! | “If only my anguish could be weighed and all my misery be placed on the scales! |
For then it would be heavier than the sand of the seas; therefore my words are restrained. | For then it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore my words have been rash. | It would surely outweigh the sand of the seas— no wonder my words have been impetuous. |
For the arrows of the Almighty are in my flesh, and their poison drinks up my spirit; the terrors of God have frightened me. | For the arrows of the Almighty are in me; my spirit drinks their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me. | The arrows of the Almighty are in me, my spirit drinks in their poison; God’s terrors are marshaled against me. |
Does the wild ass bray over grass? Or does the ox low over the fodder? | Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass, or the ox low over his fodder? | Does a wild donkey bray when it has grass, or an ox bellow when it has fodder? |
Or can that which is unsavory be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg? | Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt, or is there any taste in the juice of the mallow? | Is tasteless food eaten without salt, or is there flavor in the sap of the mallow? |
My soul is weary of its troubles, I lament like a drunken man in my affliction. | My appetite refuses to touch them; they are as food that is loathsome to me. | I refuse to touch it; such food makes me ill. |
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for! | “Oh that I might have my request, and that God would fulfill my hope, | “Oh, that I might have my request, that God would grant what I hope for, |
So that God would hearken to cleanse me, and to spread out his hand and make me whole; | that it would please God to crush me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off! | that God would be willing to crush me, to let loose his hand and cut off my life! |
And to be again my comfort, so that I may be restored to my strength without measure; for I have not lied against the words of the Holy One. | This would be my comfort; I would even exult in pain unsparing, for I have not denied the words of the Holy One. | Then I would still have this consolation— my joy in unrelenting pain— that I had not denied the words of the Holy One. |
What is my strength, that I should endure? And what is my end, that I should be patient? | What is my strength, that I should wait? And what is my end, that I should be patient? | “What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient? |
Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of brass? | Is my strength the strength of stones, or is my flesh bronze? | Do I have the strength of stone? Is my flesh bronze? |
Behold, his help is not in me, and his salvation is far off from me. | Have I any help in me, when resource is driven from me? | Do I have any power to help myself, now that success has been driven from me? |
He who withholds peace from his friend, forsakes the worship of the Almighty. | “He who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty. | “Anyone who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty. |
My brethren have dealt deceitfully like dry brooks, like torrents which pass away. | My brothers are treacherous as a torrent-bed, as torrential streams that pass away, | But my brothers are as undependable as intermittent streams, as the streams that overflow |
Those who were afraid of ice, much snow has fallen upon them. | which are dark with ice, and where the snow hides itself. | when darkened by thawing ice and swollen with melting snow, |
When the sun shines over them, they melt; when it is hot, they melt and disappear from their place. | When they melt, they disappear; when it is hot, they vanish from their place. | but that stop flowing in the dry season, and in the heat vanish from their channels. |
The paths of their ways are winding; they go astray from their course and perish. | The caravans turn aside from their course; they go up into the waste and perish. | Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go off into the wasteland and perish. |
For they have looked toward the roads of the south, and have waited for the paths of Sheba. | The caravans of Tema look, the travelers of Sheba hope. | The caravans of Tema look for water, the traveling merchants of Sheba look in hope. |
They are ashamed in what they had hoped; they came there, and were confounded. | They are ashamed because they were confident; they come there and are disappointed. | They are distressed, because they had been confident; they arrive there, only to be disappointed. |
You also have become such to me; because before you saw terror, you were afraid. | For you have now become nothing; you see my calamity and are afraid. | Now you too have proved to be of no help; you see something dreadful and are afraid. |
Did I say, Bring me a present? Or from your wealth offer a bribe for my sake? | Have I said, ‘Make me a gift’? Or, ‘From your wealth offer a bribe for me’? | Have I ever said, ‘Give something on my behalf, pay a ransom for me from your wealth, |
Or rescue me from my oppressor's hands; or deliver me from the hand of the mighty? | Or, ‘Deliver me from the adversary’s hand’? Or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the ruthless’? | deliver me from the hand of the enemy, rescue me from the clutches of the ruthless’? |
Teach me, and I will be silent; and cause me to understand wherein I have erred. | “Teach me, and I will be silent; make me understand how I have gone astray. | “Teach me, and I will be quiet; show me where I have been wrong. |
Why do you reject the words of truth? Who of you are able to rebuke and chastise? | How forceful are upright words! But what does reproof from you reprove? | How painful are honest words! But what do your arguments prove? |
Behold you are seeking to find words with which to reprove, and against my soul you are conjuring up words. | Do you think that you can reprove words, when the speech of a despairing man is wind? | Do you mean to correct what I say, and treat my desperate words as wind? |
Behold, you overwhelm the fatherless, and you grieve your friend. | You would even cast lots over the fatherless, and bargain over your friend. | You would even cast lots for the fatherless and barter away your friend. |
Now therefore listen and take heed, and I will speak in your presence, and will not lie. | “But now, be pleased to look at me, for I will not lie to your face. | “But now be so kind as to look at me. Would I lie to your face? |
Repent, I pray you, and do not become like ungodly men; repent therefore and be justified. | Please turn; let no injustice be done. Turn now; my vindication is at stake. | Relent, do not be unjust; reconsider, for my integrity is at stake. |
Is there iniquity in my tongue? Or does not my mouth speak truth? | Is there any injustice on my tongue? Cannot my palate discern the cause of calamity? | Is there any wickedness on my lips? Can my mouth not discern malice? |
