After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day, | After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. | After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. |
saying, | And Job said: | He said: |
Let the day perish in which I was born, and that night in which they said, Behold a man-child! | “Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said, ‘A man is conceived.’ | “May the day of my birth perish, and the night that said, ‘A boy is conceived!’ |
Let that night be darkness, and let not the Lord regard it from above, neither let light come upon it. | Let that day be darkness! May God above not seek it, nor light shine upon it. | That day—may it turn to darkness; may God above not care about it; may no light shine on it. |
But let darkness and the shadow of death seize it; let blackness come upon it; | Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. | May gloom and utter darkness claim it once more; may a cloud settle over it; may blackness overwhelm it. |
let that day and night be cursed, let darkness carry them away; let it not come into the days of the year, neither let it be numbered with the days of the months. | That night—let thick darkness seize it! Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months. | That night—may thick darkness seize it; may it not be included among the days of the year nor be entered in any of the months. |
But let that night be pain, and let not mirth come upon it, nor joy. | Behold, let that night be barren; let no joyful cry enter it. | May that night be barren; may no shout of joy be heard in it. |
But let him that curses that day curse it, even he that is ready to attack the great whale. | Let those curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up Leviathan. | May those who curse days curse that day, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan. |
Let the stars of that night be darkened; let it remain dark , and not come into light; and let it not see the morning star arise: | Let the stars of its dawn be dark; let it hope for light, but have none, nor see the eyelids of the morning, | May its morning stars become dark; may it wait for daylight in vain and not see the first rays of dawn, |
because it shut not up the gates of my mother's womb, for so it would have removed sorrow from my eyes. | because it did not shut the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hide trouble from my eyes. | for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes. |
For why died I not in the belly? and why did I not come forth from the womb and die immediately? | “Why did I not die at birth, come out from the womb and expire? | “Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb? |
and why did the knees support me? and why did I suck the breasts? | Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should nurse? | Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed? |
Now I should have lain down and been quiet, I should have slept and been at rest, | For then I would have lain down and been quiet; I would have slept; then I would have been at rest, | For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest |
with kings and councillors of the earth, who gloried in their swords; | with kings and counselors of the earth who rebuilt ruins for themselves, | with kings and rulers of the earth, who built for themselves places now lying in ruins, |
or with rulers, whose gold was abundant, who filled their houses with silver: | or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver. | with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver. |
or I should have been as an untimely birth proceeding from his mother's womb, or as infants who never saw light. | Or why was I not as a hidden stillborn child, as infants who never see the light? | Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day? |
There the ungodly have burnt out the fury of rage; there the wearied in body rest. | There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary are at rest. | There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest. |
And the men of old time have together ceased to hear the exactor's voice. | There the prisoners are at ease together; they hear not the voice of the taskmaster. | Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer hear the slave driver’s shout. |
The small and great are there, and the servant that feared his lord. | The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master. | The small and the great are there, and the slaves are freed from their owners. |
For why is light given to those who are in bitterness, and life to those souls which are in griefs? | “Why is light given to him who is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul, | “Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul, |
who desire death, and obtain it not, digging for it as for treasures; | who long for death, but it comes not, and dig for it more than for hidden treasures, | to those who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure, |
and would be very joyful if they should gain it? | who rejoice exceedingly and are glad when they find the grave? | who are filled with gladness and rejoice when they reach the grave? |
Death is rest to such a man, for God has hedged him in. | Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in? | Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in? |
For my groaning comes before my food, and I weep being beset with terror. | For my sighing comes instead of my bread, and my groanings are poured out like water. | For sighing has become my daily food; my groans pour out like water. |
For the terror of which I meditated has come upon me, and that which I had feared has befallen me. | For the thing that I fear comes upon me, and what I dread befalls me. | What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me. |
I was not at peace, nor quiet, nor had I rest; yet wrath came upon me. | I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest, but trouble comes.” | I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil.” |
